Yes. In the U.S.A., the income tax was unconstitutional until about 1913 or 1933; hence the need for the amendment. Slavery was legitimate until the other amendment was passed. And, combining the two, I understand that an income tax financed the union agenda during the 1860’s. Therefore, the law of the land was busted by the Union, for the Union, during a time of land expansion.

Zoltan, SIEU… What is this? Can you provide a link?
It is true that an income tax was levied to fund the Civil War but it was temporary and repealed. Of course it funded the Union. The south had its own method of funding its rebellion and refused to participate in the income tax. I believe they worked their slaves harder to sell more cotton to Europe.

SIEU is a typo that should have said SEIU. Service Employees International Union…an organization that wants more money for less work.

The Confederacy made it through the war by playing with the money, relying heavily on scrip that caused runaway inflation. During the early part of the war they refused to import cotton to Europe, hoping to coerce England into intervening just to opening up the cotton trade its mills needed. The Union imposed a blockade around the south, and later controlled the Mississippi, so the CSA couldn’t have relied too much on cotton profits. Both sides relied on games with the money supply, setting a terrible precedent for future wars. That’s another thread, though!

Did the slaves have to earn there right to be free? I thought all men are equal?
Maybe the were so much for freedom they were pro-choice. You know, where personally they were against slavery but thought people had a right to choose how best to manage their own land.😃

Seriously, they were more for independence from foreign rule than freedom, but they did want greater freedom. Mankind has evolved socially gradually. It is hard to conceive of much beyond the next step. One day I hope we will reach the point that we are a democratic society.
