Were the Jewish people mad at the Good Friday liturgy? (EF)

I am asking this question, because I was wondering (with all the controversy surrounding the prayer) if the thousands of Jewish Brothers/Sisters who attend the good friday liturgy in the extaordinary form, if anyone noticed if they (the Jewish people) seemed mad?

At my Parish, when the prayer for their conversion was read, (in latin) they all seemed very angry! Some even left. (and there was A lot of them there, wearing yarmulkes)

what was the reaction at your Parish?

Um… there usually aren’t many Jews at our parish. Why were they there?
 
We had a number of orthodox Jews attend our Good Friday liturgy. When a prayer for their conversion was read, a riot broke out in the pews. Ever since Jews have been attending Good Friday services, we’ve had complaints that the liturgy doesn’t suit them.

It’s a good that the Vatican is moving to enforce the rights of Jews to not be offended during our liturgies! 👍

I noticed no riots. But, I also noticed no Jews. If they were there they kept to themselves.

Wait, so Jews have been going to Good Friday services and whining when it doesn’t suit them? Um, correct me if I’m wrong but we don’t force them to go, if they don’t like it, they can leave. I suppose we should do the same and go to Temple and complain when they call us godless gentiles…
 
I only know one Jew who comes to our services and his whole family is Catholic. I don’t think he came to Good Friday services though. Don’t know any other Jews who come to Good Friday…why would they unless they were married to a Catholic.

Interesting, no Jews at my parish on Good Friday I don’t think. I am surprised you had a lot at your parish, dont see why they would come. If they were offended, well what can one do? That’s the Gospel right? It has the power to save someone from the very fires of hell.

are you sure you got that entirely correct? i thought they were moving to remove the attitude of condemning them for the death of Jesus?

truth is still truth, even if it hurts. yep. they don’t believe in our Lord and Savior, so if they have a problem with it, that is their problem. Jesus is our Lord, our God, and we shouldn’t back down from that. they do need our prayer of conversion, because they don’t believe that Jesus is God. i think hearing that during Mass helps them, even if they are offended. in order to be heard, someone needs to speak! 😃

Isn’t it time that we got a turn at rewriting the synagogue prayers?
 
Where is all the outcry from the other groups we pray for on Good Friday? The heretics and schismatics, the pagans. And what about those engaged in the affairs of the state? How dare we ask God to guide them when they are perfectly capable of making their own decisions.

It seems to me that good Jews should be praying for us to abandon our beliefs and worship God like they do. I mean, if we are so wrong, aren’t they concerned about our salvation?

I think you bring up a good point. I don’t have a problem with the fact Jews have a problem with some of our beliefs. Them being concerned about our beliefs simply means they take theirs seriously. I get that. I think the thing they need keep in mind though is that it applies from our direction as well. They know our religion is a one that believes in converting people. So it really shouldn’t surprise them that we pray for everyone’s conversion. I guess what they may not be realizing is that we aren’t praying for them because we think they’re bad but because we want them to be joined with us and to experience what we have.
 
Who cares. They don’t have to go to Mass. No one’s forcing them. Why should we care what they think. Should we convert to Judaism so they are not offended?

you absolutely should. Of course if you did that, you would be going to Temple for quite some time before you heard anything about godless gentiles. You might as well convert to Judaism, because you’d be going for the rest of your life.
 
Some Jewish organizations say they have a problem with it, I don’t think many Jews would know or care about it.

Very few Jews attend Good Friday services, and of that tiny number, even less attend the *Latin *Good Friday services which were only celebrated in a mere handful -less than 1%- of Catholic churches.

Of those number, only a small percentage of those in attendance actually know the Latin language which the offending prayers were said in, and only a minority of those could really understand the rapid fire Latin that they are said in.

Considering all of that, it would be tough to find one person who was truly offended by it.

The people who attend the TLM aren’t clueless. When I attend, I’m able to pray reverently and silently every public prayer contained in the missal. I don’t just sit there while the “rapid-fire” Latin goes over my head. This is a caricature. People know what’s going on at the TLM.

I’m quite certain it was a joke designed to express frustration that certain Jewish leaders insist we abandon some of the most ancient prayers of the church and change our theology to suit them.
