Were they Catholic churches?

In Revelation where it discusses the problems with the different churches…do you think they are talking about different Christian religions, different Catholic churches, or something completely unrelated and using “church” as symbolism?

The language refers to the whole entire Church. Seven is a number that symbolizes completeness and totality. With that understanding, it should not be taken literally that the message of John was only intended for those seven churches even though it would appear from the writing that he wrote only to seven.

They were either parishes or Dioceses that were under the authority of St. John, as their Bishop or Archbishop.
