Were You There When They Crucified My Lord

This song was played at Holy Thursday mass at St. Peter’s parish in New Brunswick, NJ, one of the largest parishes in our diocese. I purchased the sheet music from “International liturgy Publications” online so no copyright issues there (as far as I can tell). I also purchased a one time license to use the lyrics for Easter mass (for up to 1000 users). My pastor is fine with all of this. Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Easter is about Resurrection. For the suffering it is the Holy Thursday and Good Friday and the rest of the Pascha Lent. The whole pount of Easter is Christ’s Glory.

I’ve decided to change the Communion hymn to “This is Jesus” rather than “Were You There” because of the kind and thoughtful comments given on this forum.

Sorry dude – when you enter the liturgy wars on CAF, you have to put on the armor of God…🤣

I’m uncomfortable with “Crown Him with Many Crowns” on account of the line, “No angel in the sky can fully bear the sight, but downward turns his burning eyes from mysteries so bright.” Regardless, it’s thematically more appropriate for the Ascension or Christ the King.

What’s a liturgy war?
You will find that people “around here” are rather opinionated about what is appropriate for Mass.

It’s the nature of internet forums that people can get a bit crazy when it comes to supporting their views. Most of us really are pretty nice once you get to know us! 🙃😎

I can appreciate that. Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut. I found everyone to be very charitable! Thanks.

Ohhhh we could do like on Top Chef. The best episode would be “Liturgy Wars” where each team must plan and execute a liturgy for the judges.

Sadly, some of the liturgies I have seen are more like the “Unconventional Challenge” on Project Runway

Except no judges – the winner would be decided by which congregation sang the most. But the people in the pews would have to be in the dark about it being a contest…

How about “Christ the Lord is risen today”? Also I’m pretty sure there is an Easter sequence that is usually done. Also “O filii et filiae” is a very traditional Catholic Easter hymn. Or “Crown Him with many crowns”. “Alleluia, alleluia, let the holy anthem rise”. Is there someone you can consult with at your parish? The pastor – or is there another music director who has done this before? Good luck!

A great list! The one I’ve heard most often is Jesus Christ is risen today but my current parish has had Thine Be the Glory! for many years, and when it’s sung by a congregation familiar with it is uplifting!

A personal favourite of mine on your list, from my Anglican years is “The Strife is O’er, the Battle Won”. I can’t imagine hearing that in a suburban Catholic church - we tend to avoid the bassy, majestic hymns 😦

We’re in a poor, rural church. I’d never heard that one before in any of the previous suburban churches I’ve ever attended-- but our Nigerian priest introduced us to it last year. It’s an awesome song and we do our best, but I’m sure it’s a thousand times more awesome when it’s handled by a great, booming organ and a choir that knows what it’s doing! 💙 Definitely needs to be brought out more in the repertoire!

I’m just glad you to hear that you are singing it and giving it your best! ❤️ Congratulations on discovering a great hymn!

Jesus Christ Is Risen Today! was the recessional at the Vigil for years in our parish. The last couple of years though the choir has opted for Hass’s God Is Alive! I miss the traditional hymn. 😦
