Jesus Christ Is Risen Today! was the recessional at the Vigil for years in our parish. The last couple of years though the choir has opted for Hass’s God Is Alive! I miss the traditional hymn. 😦
That’s sad. 😔

On Easter Sunday we sang, “Jesus Christ is Risen Today,” as the processional hymn. For the recessional we sang Ken Canedo’s, “Alleluia, Give the Glory.” (I know a lot of people don’t like it but it’s like, “Were You There;” it’s meant to be sung Gospel style.)

Or to Beethoven’s 9’th symphony commonly known as “Ode to Joy”…which personally I get really tired of hearing new lyrics set to every season.

I think it’s a matter of personal preference, but I see “Were You There” as a hymn reserved for Palm Sunday and/or Good Friday. Easter Sunday is a time for great rejoicing. We’re coming off the Season of Lent and the celebration of Our Lord’s Passion. It’s a time to bring out the joy.

The final list for Easter Sunday was:

Jesus Christ is Risen Today

Lord You Have Come

This is Jesus

Christ be Our Light.

Hope all the music folks are enjoying a bit of a rest after Holy Week! Thank you all for your hard work and all the hours you put in!!

My favorite communion hymn is “I Am the Bread of Life” and I can imagine it being very appropriate for Holy Thursday or Easter Sunday.
