Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh!
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh!
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?
Oh!
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh!
Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

I can’t believe you posted this. I went to adoration the other night and asked the Lord to help me with my anxiety. Afterwards I was able to go to Mass by myself and this was the last song of the night. It took me a couple of verses before I realised He was answering my request. Not the answer I was hoping for , but an answer still. Thanks for your prayers the other day, it did give me a day of relief.Tim

This is one of my FAVORITE songs. I heard it sung by a beautiful black woman (the song has black origins) at our parish in Chicago when I was in college. (Poor south end parish near our school…it was a very spiritual place and I still miss it more than 10 years later!) She was one of the best cantors I ever heard. There are things that still today, when I hear others sing them, I hear her voice because it was just the most lovely rendition I ever heard. I have never forgotten this song because of how she sang it, and I just love hearing it during this season.

Thanks for the wonderful memories!

Johnny Cash and June Carter and Sisters sing the best version of this song. And they include the last verse.

That is just such a beautiful hymn. We sang it at our Good Friday service.
