I saw some videos on Youtube about this group called Westboro Baptist Church that was protesting funerals of American Solders. Who exactly is this group and as Catholics, how do we counter what they are doing?

I would guess the best way to counter them is to ignore them. They love to make noise, be rude and obnoxious, but in the end, probably ignoring them is the best that can be done.

I would recommend charity, liberally applied with a baseball bat. Keep at it 'til they stop twitching. It’s the only way to be sure.

I find these people vile.

They are a very small group, maybe only a couple of families. They are not really much of anything other than jerks. They are rude and totally insensative. There have been posters on this board who have been in counter protests, like the vets on motorcycles that block them and drowned them out. They were sued for several million dollars and lost, but since their church had nothing, it did not matter.

As Catholics, we should pray for them. We should try to teach them why they are wrong. We should ignore them.

AS a human, I would have a hard time ignoring them. Especially if it was one of my family’s funerials.

To be honest, I feel sorry for their kids, as they are being tought to hate and to be biggots to.

This is the group run by Fred Phelps.

They claim to be Baptist, but are not recognized by any mainstream Baptist group.

They operate a number of “anti” type websites like godhatesamerica.com and godhatesfags.com, things like that.

Like one of the earlier posters said, his congregation is small and made up mostly of his family members.

His daughter shirley phelps roper was arrested in 2007 for contributing to the deliquency of a minor for allowing her child to trample on the American Flag,

The Phelps clan is the reason for recent legislation in many states that limit or deny the ability for protests at military funerals.

there is an interesting interview with her on fox news, where she and the commentator go at it pretty good, and shows how clearly delusional the whole bunch is.

As several have said, the best thing to do is ignore them. The more people pay attention to them, the more coverage they get from the national media.

A few years ago, there were some Phelps emails released on the Net, which seem to have been authentic. Apparently the Westboro folks believe that the Phelps family, and they alone, are descended from one of David’s “mighty men”, and that they (and the guys who married into the family) will eventually rule the world, being the true successors to David (under Phelps, of course). They don’t believe in Christ, but they do believe in getting tax breaks from the IRS and absolute obedience to Fred Phelps.

So basically, not Baptists, not Christians, not a church. Just a tight little family cult.

I watched a documentary on Phelps and how he would abuse is children, among other things.

He must have gotten tired of all 300 million Americans overwhelmingly ignoring him and decided to roam the world in search of someone who would pay him some attention. He can just keep roaming. I doubt he’ll find his audience anywhere.
