What are your thoughts on the Westboro Baptist church? Are they a church at all? What do they believe in?😦

They are a church that preaches hate. God is a God of justice, but his justice cannot be separated from his love and mercy. The power of the Gospel is that there is love and grace and forgiveness and new life in Christ Jesus. This message gets lost in the screaming about who and what God hates.

Westboro has forgotten (or perhaps they never knew to begin with) that divine judgment does not begin with the homosexuals, etc. Judgment begins with the house of God (1 Peter 4:17), and we will all answer for every idle and evil word we speak (Matthew 12:36).

Thank you, I am one of the dreaded gays gasp
They made me very depressed and hate myself (I kinda still do)
I also fear the day of judgement 🤷

P. S. One of the most impressive parts of Scripture to me is 1 Peter 4:8, “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” Westboro doesn’t understand this, and I have to wonder why? Maybe they themselves don’t truly know the love of God?

Thank you for this wonderful answer.

These people made me depressed and hate myself, in still not right from it:shrug:

Also I have another question, do they believe that only members of their own church will enter heaven?:hmmm:

OP, I am sorry they have made you feel this way about yourself. Pay no attention to the Westboro Baptist church. They seem to find a way to hate everyone.

God loves you and nothing can change that, no matter what the people at Westboro want to believe. He is all we need, His mercy and love are all that matter, so be at peace with yourself.

Thank you for your kind words , i appreciate them 😃

They hate just about everybody. Homosexuals, Catholics, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, the Pope, the President, the Eastern Orthodox, the American military…you name it.

Don’t let it get to ya. 🙂

I don’t consider them a church at all (let alone Christian).

Involving their little children is a disgusting thing to do. They have them holding up placards with hateful words on them that they won’t even understand.

If anyone here has been personally affected by the Westboro crew, you have all my sympathy and prayers. As hate-speakers, they would not even be allowed to enter the UK.

Westboro “Baptist” Church? The scourge of this town. I live in the same town as them. The bus I ride the most goes right by there (and there is little to no way to go around it). These idiots, for that is what they are, have picketed outside my church a few times. Actually, I haven’t seen them picketing lately. Of course, they are starting to lose members. Their founder, Fred Phelps, died some time ago, and some of his grandkids have left the church as young adults. As far as I know there are few if any members who aren’t related in some way. So, don’t worry about them. They aren’t worth the notice given them by the press.

Well, they’re a church. But whether they’re a Baptist Church or even a Christian Church is up for debate. They are clearly and insular and hate filled group of people however regardless of what they claim to profess. Frankly they have many of the signs of a cult even absent their penchant for angering the rest of the population.

They are just a small insular family group which is even losing family members. Their publicity has far exceeded their reality. I would hardly call them Baptist. They self define their own beliefs.

I agree with this 100%. It’s always fascinated me that they get any attention at all - they are a handful of relatives and they have invented their bizarre, poisonous beliefs. I feel sorry for them. Whenever I run across a news article that includes them, I just pray for them.

They get publicity for a few reasons. First, because they’re very vocal, visible and hateful when they protest (particularly when they were protesting soldiers which got them the bulk of their publicity). They’re also ridiculously litigious which garners them even more attention both for the cases themselves and the appeals. They’re also given more attention than they’re worth in part I suspect due to the name of their “church.” By calling themselves “Baptist,” they’re invoking the name of the second largest Christian denominational family in the US, and invoking a sort of status that using that name brings with it (wrongly so of course).

They’re far from the only ones with warped beliefs, such as they are, or who do what they do. But the Phelps to their warped credit, have been very good at publicizing and garnering attention for their band of misfits in a way similar hate street preachers have not been able to do. It’s that first and last issue in particular I think which has given them the biggest boosts, the protesting soldiers and using the name of the Baptist faith family.

These are very good points. I read a long fascinating article recently about a young Westboro woman (early 20s but raised in the “church” her entire life) who was actually convinced via her followers on Twitter and other social networking platforms of the wrongness of the beliefs she had been force-fed her whole life. At the end of the article, she had actually left the rat’s nest to take a try at her own life. So I guess there is some hope for some of the younger members.
