Westboro to picket Basilica in Atlanta

I know we live in America, but how can hate speech be tolerated? These WestBoro people are plaining on Picketing the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Atlanta Georga during Mass. Whats wrong with these people. BTW their signs are going to be Vulgar.
 
God is using them to permit us the opportunity to show great Love and forbearance.

Why are they doing this?

The rector should find the means to construct a dialogue with these people. Picketing is so much a medium of dissent and the world, and misunderstanding.

I don’t think dialogue is possible with this particular group of people.

Sadly, I am inclined to agree; these people are horribly deluded, and even worse, they’ve drawn their children into their delusion. I don’t hold much hope for the parents, but I hope that God’s mercy will prevail on the children, since they’ve essentially been force-fed hatred since their birth.

These type of people hate Catholics as well. Sadly they are more interested in getting on the local news with their hate speech rather than actually doing God’s work. 🤷

You can’t dialogue with the willfully ignorant: they’ll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Freedom of speech is not something we should just throw off lightly because we don’t like the kooky Westboro people.

But what? What about when its your turn to say in public why “gay marriage” isn’t gay and isn’t marriage? Or will you just keep quiet?

I believe they have every right just as I do to proclaim their “truth” but when and how does it go to far?
 
I think these Westboro people are doing the work of Satan, not God, in spreading their hate and intolerance. They do not deserve to be called Christian in any way.
 
If I was a member of the parish, I would start organizing my own group of “protestors” and stand on Church property with our own signs. I’d be holding my own “love fest” instead of a protest. I would base it on the group of bikers that counter protest Westboro at any military funeral they choose to protest.
 
Must be a slow time for this family if this is all they have to do this time of year.
 
I would just hope that this is just another one of their announcements of a ‘picket’ that doesn’t actually go ahead. These people know full well that just the threat of their presence is enough to cause anxiety.

Free speech traditionally stops at certain customary limits: provoking fights (duels), false statements, obscenity/pornography, threats, copyrights, etc.

What Westboro is doing affects almost no one. It only provides some people an opportunity to feel morally superior, while eventually shutting down your speech.

God always gives us the freedom to choose all the rope we want to hang ourselves with - and the Westboro bunch have cornered the market.

Well, I think it affects quite a few of people. The WBC is very outspoken about their belief that every Catholic priest is a “rapist” and other horrible things. “By extension”, they say, every Catholic is guilty of that as well. That would most certainly not leave me untouched, and I doubt that priests enjoy being attacked in this way.
