Western Heroes: Are they good role models?

So this semester at the university I took a comic book class. The course was in Spanish, and we talked about superheroes like the Avengers. We also spoke about western’s which in my opinion, here in the US and Mexico have excellent movies about westerns.

Theirs a thread about what is your favorite western. I posed this question there, but I want people to not deviate into a second topic so I decided to ask the question here.

Do you see heroes in Westerns as good role models? Why?

I say yes, because these men take care of their community. Especially in Mexico they are very family and religion oriented. They are men who are willing to defend what is right, and are men of their word.
 
Interesting question. Some are good, some are bad, some are in-between.

Will Kane from High Noon - yes
Ethan Edwards from The Searchers - no
Shane - yes, especially by the end
Rooster Cogburn from True Grit - definitely heroic, but definitely not a role model. Mattie is the real hero though, isn’t she?
 
They can be.

And, often when a character is less than admirable early in the plotline, this simply makes way for character development.

BTW, OP, I concur about the Mexican films.
