Western-Rite EO DL commemoration

Has anyone here been to a Western-Rite EO DL? I read in another thread that they commemorate the Bishop of Rome. is that true? If it is, do they commemorate him by name, or just a general “Bishop of Rome?”

Also, what jurisidction are Western-Rite EO? Antiochian, Russian, other?

I’ve been to a few (and they would refer to themselves as being “Western Orthodox” or “Western Orthodox Catholic” )

The Antiochian Orthodox Church has a Western Rite and there is also one in the ROCOR (they have a Western Rite Benedictine Monastery in Hamilton with the Rev. Fr. Abbot James Dechenes - a very holy man).

There are actually two liturgical Western rites - one called the Rite of St Gregory for former Roman Catholics and the other the Rite of St Tikhon (patriarch of Moscow) for former Anglicans.

I can tell you that they do NOT commemorate the Bishop of Rome, but their respective local Bishop and also their Patriarch.

Lancelot Andrewes Press publishes their books, including the Book of Common Prayer (according to Orthodox Catholic usage).

The Anglican heritage appears much more fully represented within Orthodoxy than within RCism. It is a magnificent, inspiring heritage!

This may be true for the moment, but I’m sure that this will change shortly as the Anglican Use personal ordinariates are established in various countries. We already have several Church of England bishops interested in joining…

There are actually more than that currently being used by Orthodox. The DL of St. Gregory and DL of St. Tikhon are not really geared towards any group in particular, but people from Roman Catholicism and high-church Anglicanism are more disposed to those because that is their heritage. Nor are those liturgies required to be used by former RCs or Anglicans, but they are among the several that are most commonly used. Others that come to mind are the Gallican, Mozarabic, Sarum and Celtic rites. I don’t think you meant for your words to come across that way, but I wanted to clarify for the benefit of other readers.

Hieromonk Aidan (Keller) of the ROCOR is a major proponent of Western Orthodoxy and has wrote extensively on the subject. Western Orthodoxy in the ROCOR is slowly growing steadily. A vagante group was recently received into the Western Rite by Metroplitan Hilarion complete with 18 clergy and several parishes, not to mention that in the not too distant past, various disaffected Anglicans banded together to form an Orthodox Western Rite mission.

And as you stated, WR Orthodox do not commemorate the Roman pope, but their bishop, metropolitan, and patriarch. When I return home to Virginia in mid December, I hope to visit a local Western Rite parish that was started by a former Anglican bishop. I will be sure to post my experience here.
