Hi all so I’ve been doing a pretty good job overcoming my addiction to masturbation. Ive been “sober” for a few weeks and still going strong but now and then I get a wet dream. Is that bad? One of the challenges with overcoming masturbation is getting rid of the lust and tempting feeling which takes time. I’ve been doing a good job with that so far but whenever I get a wet dream I feel like its because of those feelings haven’t completely disappeared yet which makes me feel like I’m doing wrong again.
Is there any way to get rid of wet dreams?
Makes me feel like I’m not doing something right when it happens.

Nocturnal emission is involuntary. You’re thoughts and your hormones are two different things (in this department anyway). You can only control one, and you can’t control this.

If someone at school had seizure and peed themselves would you blame them for it or think they meant to?

If you had a nightmare and screamed and woke up you’re whole family, did you do it on purpose?

This is normal. If you’re going through puberty right now it is especially expected.

Yup. 👍

You are not responsible for what you dream or what happens in your dreams or whether your body emits semen when you are asleep.

“Wet Dreams” are a natural means of your body expelling semen/sperm. When I was in my early 20’s (when I also had quit the man-handling routine) it was almost like clock-work for me…every 2 weeks. Gradually it stopped. I guess there are times when semen or sperm build up and need to be released…or sometimes the hormones are simply kicking into gear. Nothing you can do about it, and nothing you need to do about it.

One simply turns ones attention to other things when one wakes and does not consent to any pleasure or thoughts etc.

Just live a Christian life and do not worry about them happening at times. Biological happening that one does not refer back to.

Hey way to go on being “sober” a few weeks. Looks like some great answers on the thread. Prayers for continued recovery.
Mary.

It is not possible to commit a sin in your sleep. Period.

Committing a sin, either venial or mortal, involves an act of free will. When you’re asleep you cannot exercise your free will. Therefore you cannot sin in your sleep.

Wet dreams are not sinful. There is no reason to think about them at all. When you wake up and notice that you have had one, clean yourself up and go back to bed.

A gray area in many young men’s minds is when the dream occurs during that period of semi-wakefulness in the morning (or as you are falling asleep), where you’re neither fully asleep, nor fully awake. It is not possible to commit a mortal sin without full consent of your will. When you’re in this state, you cannot give full consent of your will. Therefore, no mortal sin.

This is the very clear teaching of the Church. Do not worry about this at all.

If you think about it, how else could it be with a loving and just God?! How could a just God hold you responsible for something you have no control over?

In St. Peter Morrone’s–aka Pope St. Celestine V’s–memoirs (reproduced in Medieval Hagiography: an Anthology, edited by Thomas Head) he talks about how he became scrupulous about this issue and whether or not he should receive communion afterward. Then, he had a dream where he he was tied to a donkey, and he was leading the donkey up a mountain towards a beautiful church. The donkey kept defecating on its way up. Peter decided he should not enter the church with the donkey as its feces would soil the church, but he could not leave it outside. Then Christ appeared in priestly garments and encouraged him to enter the church, but Peter explained to Him why he could not. Christ then said something to the effect of, “what is it to Me if the donkey merely does what is natural to it?” and so Peter and his donkey entered the church with a clean conscience. Peter wrote that after that dream, he no longer worried about such emmissions.

What if you are dreaming but realize that you are dreaming and desire overpowers you and you sin in terrible ways in the dream? When I wake up I can resist temptation but when I am asleep, conscious of it or not, I do things that I wouldn’t do, sometimes choosing to because it is a dream.

But basically, it is impossible to sin while you are asleep. It is impossible to sin in your dreams. Sinning requires a conscious choice. By definition, when you are sleeping, you are not conscious. Don’t analyze it any further than that.

This is not my opinion. It is the teaching of the Church.

Wet dreams are a natural bodily funtion for males, so don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault; they happen by themselves.
