if japan says whaling is legal in their waters that is their right as a soverign nation, and attacks by forieners on their ships should be viewed as an act of war, making any response from them self defense.

Which would be all fine and dandy, except that for the most part, they hunt whales in international waters, not their own. That is largely the basis for the legal objection to their actions.

so if say france starts sinking american cruise ships in international because they pollute would our navy be at fault to protect our citizens?

a military can protect its people wherever they have a right to be. i say down a few boats, save then jail the survivors and see how many recruits this group gets.

I also hear that they were recently using a laser device called a “dazzler”, designed to be shot into a person’s face and cause confusion and temporary blindness. Wouldn’t that be considered putting the whaler crew’s lives at risk?

Can the claim that the men are willing to die for the whales, be hyperbole, though based on a signed paper for insurance purposes!? When you have surgery, you make a decision that accepts the fact that the surgery may harm you. So, it would be prudent to wait, until, the surgery could only make a difference in a person who is close to death, blindness, etc. I answered my own question, 'cept the danger to the sailors seems to be similar in reality, to any other sailing duty, and less than a surgery. Maybe papers are signed before bungie jumping.

I was watching Sarah Palin’s Alaska, and my nephew in-law was flipping over to whale wars. Everyone likes shows about boats in the ocean, I think. About creatures in the ocean in fact! It does seem like a man’s show. Men risk their lives in many occupations: Coal mining, factory work, climbing, electrical work, police and fire … And saving the whales from extinction, and they are fighting bad stewardship of the earth, so they are hot rather than lukewarm in their faith.

I think that the posters are trying to apply war theory here! Is it just or not! It reminds one of war, by the name given, and, I don’t think that they would harm, intentionally or otherwise another sailor. Only nations can do that in declaring a war, wars being about economic factors it is well known! Where humans are hurt, and are propagandized in order to get the consent for culpability. So the war can be paid for.

What leader understands that the Christians always suffer!

They suffer when the whales are slaughtered, and when they have the good heart to care about the waste of God’s creation. I don’t think that we in our easy chairs, maybe, can judge a group of sailors who are caring about God’s creation and compare them to piracy, when the Japanese are more similar to being the pirates in this. Case, because of their greed.

The moratorium on whale hunting is still on. Whale hunting is still done in the guise of scientific research. There are huge profits to be made. Hunting is even done in the southern sanctuary. Whale meat is not necessary for survival. It is not consumed by the younger Japanese.

I am against whale hunting as I am against the killing of baby seals for fur, fur ranching and like industries and I would use non violent means to stop these.

I am surprised at how so many Christians can use religion to justify the use and abuse of animals as mere commodities. Aren’t we made in the image of God with superior intellect privileged and obliged to show mercy and compassion to God’s other creatures?

The “Animal Planet” cable network has begun running a new series called “Whale Wars”. It is the story of an environmentalist group called the “Sea Sheppards” who believe in taking direct action to stop legal Japanese whaling in the Great South Ocean.

Most of the crew of their boat are volunteers. On the show it was stated that to be accepted as a volunteer, you must be able to make the statement, “I would be willing to die to save the life of a whale.”

My question is, from the POV of Catholic moral theology, is this a moral or an immoral statement?

For a person to say they are willing to die for an animal is outrageous and stupid.
Why aren’t these people trying to do something to help the millions of poor and oppressed children in the world? These people are putting a higher value on animal life than human life.
