I’ve been studying the bible for about 10 years now. I’ve reached a point where I’m no longer interested to dig deeper into scripture or general knowledge of Catholicism for that matter. I think to myself “What’s the use? Your wife doesn’t like talking about religion neither do your friends, your kids are too young to understand deep theology, just retain the basics and live your Christian life to the best of your ability”.
I’m afraid if I don’t read scripture regularly, I will forget the deep insights I have learned over the years, yet I feel there’s no point in retaining the knowledge if I have no one to share it with.
Your feedback would be very valuable to me…
I could’ve posted this word for word instead of you. I know exactly how you feel based on what you said.
The Spiritual life can ebb and flow. Sometimes we need to pray more and study less. Others have given some great advice already. Here’s one other thought:
I suggest that you keep up the intensity with your reading and studying, and take time to rest and recover as needed. Then get right back to studying. Here’s why:
Your kids are going to grow way too fast. The world will try to steal them from you and from God. That is what the world does. The devil wants their souls just as he wants ours. It is up to you, as their father, to be as prepared as you possibly can be to teach them the Truth as best you can. They will have questions. And you will need to have the answers to shed light on all of the lies they may hear. After all, if you aren’t going to do that…who in the heck will? Are you counting on somebody else stepping up for you and doing that?
No. You will. You have that responsibility to them. Do you love your children enough to continue to pray, study, read, burn the midnight oil, and sacrifice for them so that when they come to you when they are older and ask you a tough one, will you say:
“Ha! That old one! I’ve heard that a hundred times and I can prove to you that that idea is false in 5 different ways! With my eyes closed! And with both hands tied behind my back!”
Or
“Hmm. You know. That’s a good question. I used to know alot about that. I can’t remember how to answer it, though. I guess I don’t know. I’ll get back to you when I find time to look it up.”
Sacrifice for your kids. Pray for your kids. Study for your kids. Love your kids.
You may not have anyone to share your knowledge with…yet. But if you live your entire life and all of the hours and hours of prayer and studying you have done result in only the opportunity to help your children, or one single random stranger later in your life…would that be worth it? You know it would!
10 years is alot. Nice job. Now find what you need to refresh, regroup, reload and keep it up! Like someone said earlier…“You don’t know it all, yet!” You can spend the rest of your life studying and still not know it all yet.
Keep going for your children’s sakes. That’s what I am doing myself. I think it is worth it.
