In most offices, the OP and colleagues would **all **have been called on the carpet for these conversations, which, minimally, made life uncomfortable for those involved. The OP was made to feel uncomfortable. And she made others feel uncomfortable as well. Not the time or the place . . . At its worst, it is called harrassment.

I agree with her opinions; but they don’t belong in the workplace.
Sure, its prohibited to discuss any topic no matter how vulgar, profane, or perverted, but religion is banned. Keep your religion to yourself. It is banned. Free speech but. If you buy this then leave Jesus home in the drawer. Talk about the weather and sports and stock market.

And firthermore:

What can happen? Get fired, so what. Paul was arrested and scourged and beheaded. How many martyrs suffered worse? Modern Christians are afraid of sharing the gospel, brainwashed, politically correct, intimidated and afraid of their shadows. Bunch of wimps!

Don’t ever feel terrible for doing the right thing. It’s hard - but no one ever said it would be easy.

Jesus didn’t say “I come with a ham sammich and a party”, He said, “I come with a sword…”.

You did the right thing. Others have been fed to lions for it - you got some cold shoulders. You came away quite fortunate.

Keep up the good work. 👍

You did nothing wrong and you shouldn’t feel bad about it at all. You spoke your mind and voiced your beliefs just as they did. You should expect the same respect for your beliefs as those other women expect for theirs. And if they give you a hard time, point this out to them.

“Respect, I’ll expect nothing more and I’ll accept nothing less” – Margaret Houlihan

You stood up for what you believe in and that’s awesome. I don’t think you did anything wrong.

I deal with similar situations at times in my bio and Spanish classes. Bio because of the bioethics issues (namely, IVF, though I see abortion coming into it pretty soon), and Spanish because I find that there is at least a little anti-Catholicism running through (criticizing the Catholic Church for all the problems in Latin America, namely). It’s hard thinking you’re the only voice but sometimes there are others in silent agreement. In bio, one of my friends is Christian and prolife as well and told me later that she was proud of me for standing up for life and in Spanish, a bunch of us did a presentation about how Castro and Che Guevara really aren’t the heroes people make them out to be (after interviewing a Cuban couple who went to school with Castro and worked under Che Guevara). Recently, a Catholic guy friend told me he was proud of me for going out and praying in front of abortion clinics (in a very funny way, it was when I said I wasn’t serving enough and he’s like, “You’re fighting abortion at the age of 18! What’s not impressive about that?!”).

There are more out there. Pray for them to have courage. Also, understand that so many are misguided.

When people ask me my own opinion of homosexuality, I just say the lifestyle is not my cup of tea and leave it at that. And I’ve had some issues with SSA myself. But I know I want to marry a man and have children and I know how my body was designed, so it really has never become a huge issue in my life. Just fleeting temptations that can be fought with a rosary.

I am proud of you Jules! We are called to be a light to others, and that is what you were doing. You should be proud of yourself as well. You conveyed your message in a very polite way. We should not hide our beliefs from others at work. I would be careful when you choose to discuss it though. For example, it it is on a work break that is fine. Just make sure they can`t accuse you of “evangelizing on company time” as an excuse to penalize you etc.

We need to be honest about our faith and have the courage to share it with others. I am proud of you.

Sincerely,

Surely you can’t be serious? Harrasment? That’s pretty harsh. There ws no harrassment I assure you. It was a normal conversation where people disagreed. I don’t know what country you are living in but here we have the freedom to talk about what we want. Noone can tell us we are not allowed to. There is NO law against it.
Yes, they’re uncomfortable. But it’s only that way because we like each other and do not want to hurt the others.

In Corporate USA, the HR regulations are very strict about what can and cannot be discussed in the workplace.

Let’s say you are making statements about the lifestyle being wrong to another worker. A co-worker in the cube over, not invoved with the conversation, takes issue with it. They can claim thrid party harrassment or hostile work enviornment. By the same token, the person who says derrogatory things about the Catholic faith could have those accusations made toward them.

One is always advised to leave discussions about religion or sex or politics OUTSIDE of the office.

kage ar has a point…I think it’s important that others we work with, neighbors, etc…know about the joy in our hearts, however. We are called to share the Good News with everyone–not just a select few–and it’s hard to know who God is going to place in our paths. That being said–it can be done without offending anyone–people at my work, know that I’m Catholic, and my love for God…I have gotten to know so many people, who share the same faith…that I might not have known, had I kept silent. I don’t think we should keep silent, but there are ways to deliver the Gospel of Christ, without offending.

jules-I don’t believe your discussion was offensive, but I can see where one thing led to another…God will take care of the details…you planted the seeds, now let Him bring it to harvest. 🙂

Every company I’ve ever worked has had the same policy as well.THere is a time and a place for eveything.

In corporate Judaism Saint Peter was forbidden to tak about Jesus. What did he do? Was he cowed into silence? What will you do?

Sorry Whatever, Jesus said we would be a sign of contradiction. People are offended by the gospel, because it convicts them of sin. We either admit we are sinners or try to justify ourselves. If I deny my sinfulness a Christian who holds up a moral standard will make me very angry, no matter how much he loves me.

I don’t think any of us would try to offend or take offence. I don’t think the laws regarding what can be discussed in the workplace are that strict here. I have heard nothing of this. We all like each other and respect each other. And I do not see these people very much outside work. I didn’t mean to start anything with any of them but I am so tired of the ignorant views of people that just go along with any new twisted idea and immoral thing that is the trend at the time. I think that it would be cowardly and quite wrong not to try to gently say something and stand up for God. No matter how bad it makes me feel.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I thought about it a lot. I came to the conclusion that people do not like to hear about religion because if it really is right, and they’re not living it, that makes them wrong. And noone likes to be told they’re wrong.
I am not in the slightest bit concerned about it now. My boss is also my very good friend. I would be in no trouble and in the four years I have worked there, its been one of about three times we have ever discussed this stuff.
I have had our HR manager talk to others about how much he disagrees with homosexuality. He openly says it. He was brought up Catholic, but is not practising now, but still holds these views. Noone has ever been told off or chastised. Nothing has ever been mentioned of there being a problem or it being against the law.
I do not seek to argue or discuss religion but if it arises, I will certainly say my bit.
We were not nasty. I may have offended this lady, but I didn’t mean to.

That’s great, jules, but please don’t feel like you are being put on the defensive here either. As you said, you may have offended that woman, but what about her offending you? She may not have meant to either, but my point is, you demand and deserve as much respect regarding your beliefs as she does. So hold your head high. And certainly, if it arises again, say your bit!!!

Oh, great, don’t lay religious guilt trips on people to make them think they need to be fanatical nutcases in the workplace willing to risk their jobs otherwise they are letting Jesus down.

Besides, it was political Judaism, not corporate Judaism. If you are going to lay a guilt trip on someone, at least get the 15-second soundbite straight.

Huh?

I think it is our duty to speak up in the workplace. If we hadn’t been silenced so long the world would not be in its current mess.

A person is a fanaticial nutcase if he is willing to lose his job for the gospel? What were the martyrs who risked and gave their lives? Were Saints Stephen, Maximillian, Maria Goretti, Peter, Paul, the thirty thousand beheaded in Korea, and millions of others around the world martyred over two millenia fanatical nutcases?

Indeed is was political Judaism that Peter would not obey to keep silent with Jesus’s message to the world, as it is the American political establishment that is tryng to silence Christians today.

We would not want to become so religious that it might cost us something. That would be way too fanatic.
