Is this “Secular News,” “Catholic News,” or “Family Life?” I guess it could fit anywhere.

abcnews.go.com/GMA/Parenting/divorce-battle-joseph-reyes-faces-jail-baptizing-daughter-church/story?id=9845919

Catholic man marries Jewish women. Man converts to Judaism to please his in-laws. Child is born. Child attends Jewish school and is being raised Jewish. Couple split. Wife gets custody. Man suddenly decides that he is Catholic again. During visitation, and without wife’s permission, takes child to church and has her baptized. Sends estranges wife pictures documenting the event. Wife goes ballistic. Takes man to court. Judge issues restraining order stating that the child may not be exposed to any religion other than the Jewish religion. In defiance of restraining order, man takes child to church again. Before doing so he alerts the media so they can cover the event. Man now faces a possible 6 month jail term for contempt of court.

What a mess.

sounds like catholic man suffers natural consequences for apostacy.

Idiots all around, and of course the one who suffers most is the child.

and it sounds like he’s dragged his poor little daughter to media-hosted weinie roast of their lives.

Wow. This is horrid. I don’t really see how the judge can order the father to only expose child to Judiasm though. I mean even if he vowed to raise their kids Jewish when he married, all the other vows have been broken, so why would this one stand? This is the terrible thing about divorce.

If the dad wants to be a jerk about religion, then isn’t this a free country? I guess I just feel like everyone involved is overstepping boundaries and acting horridly, courts included.

Father has strong constitutional arguments on his side, but all parties involved have behaved poorly.

This is one of the reasons both Jews and Christians discourage intermarriage…to avoid conflicts like this. I know there are people that can work through their religious differences but many times there are problems like this family. As much as I love Jesus and I think we should all love Him, when these 2 people got married, he agreed to bring the kids up Jewish and that’s what they are… I would be angry if I had a Jewish ex husband who started taking them to a synagogue…

No kidding. He called the media first before going to church. Then he has the gall to tell a national television audience that this stunt will indeed help “resolving” the custody situation.

Yeah it will. Because its going to get him tossed in jail for contempt of court. That will solve everything really quickly.

He promised to do everything possible to raise his daughter Catholic. Now, he takes that seriously. His methods - calling the media - are what our culture teaches people to do. He is unwise to call the media, but, wise to want to raise his daughter Catholic.

So this excuses the fact that at the time he was married and the child was born, he promised that she (and he) would be Jewish?

Imagine it the other way around – what if the wife had converted to Catholicism, they raised the child as a Catholic, and then the mother took her and had her “converted” to Judaism behind Dad’s back? Would that make her a good Jew?

If he wanted to convert back, and bring her to Mass when he had visitation in order to expose her to his faith, I would be fine with that. But to have her baptized without her mother’s consent seems combative, at the very least.

of course i wont dispute the rghtness of wanting to raise his child catholic. unless i read it wrong, he made no promise. were they married in the catholic church?

his methods-- going all the way back to apostacy in order to appease his inlaws-- are terrible and potentially damaging and scandalous to his child.

It’s one thing to have doubts and become a baptist or orthodox.

It’s another to renounce Christ.

And to do EITHER just to get married is sickening, truly sickening.

He’s got some problems, that’s for sure. I’ll keep him in my prayers.

Actually, as he converted to Judaism, he probably promised to raise her in the Jewish faith.

And if he behaved a little better about it, possibly the mother wouldn’t have flipped out. I mean really, having her baptized, then sending photos to mom. Then calling the media. What a horrible place to put that poor child.

She will be in my prayers

The title of the thread should have been “court intervenes to stop forced conversion of Jewish child”.

And now the child’s bound by the all the laws of the Church (including the marriage laws when she’s older), and since Dad’s likely going to go to jail and lose all unsupervised visitation until the kid’s 18, she’s going to be “raised” Jewish (I put that in quotes b/c, Mom accepts it or not, she’s technically Catholic now thanks to the Baptism) she’ll have no knowledge of this (her obligations as a Catholic), and it could cause a big mess later in life should she decide to pursue Catholicism, or even just marry a Catholic.

I hate it when adults use kids to hurt each other

And where’s the priest/deacon who performed the Baptism? I thought in mixed parenting situations the nonCatholic parent had to agree to the Baptism and raising the child Catholic? Someone dropped the ball there, too, or else the Dad layed quite a snow job on them, too!

In Christ,

Ellen

The artilce linked in the original post implies that dad may have baptized the child himself. But it’s not really clear. I don;t think a priest or a deacon would have performed this baptism if all of the facts were known.

LOL! Guess I should probably read the article, eh? :D. Well, that casts doubt on the validity of the Baptism, doesn’t it? I thought “laypeople” were only allowed to Baptize when there was danger of death?

On a totally unrelated note, I’m in the St. Louis area too (O’Fallon, MO), and lived in your ZIP code (63116) for the 1st 24 years of my life. Small world!
