- Liberalism has been allowed to run rampant to the devastation of much of the church.
- Teaching has been weak, yes. The Church is always in need of reform. However, the Catholic Church doesn’t have a monopoly on this: my experience with Evangelicals and other Protestants has been very disheartening in this regard. The fascination with End Times; the ignorance of Scripture beyond a few memorized phrases; the lack of critical thinking; on and on. Many of my friends are Evangelicals, but they are indistinguishable in their habits from nice atheists that I know. Meanwhile, the Catholics I know are on fire with enthusiasm for Jesus and His Church.
- Wickedness can never be completely removed from ANY institution, as long as there are humans in it. I’ve never known anyone personally who was molested by a Catholic priest, but my best friend’s daughter was molested—by a Protestant minister (the daughter is now a screwed-up atheist). Did it make the newspapers? Nope. The church (an Evangelical church) hushed the whole thing up, and then ostracized my friend, no doubt because she made them a bit uncomfortable by just being around. The rates of abuse in the ministry are about the same for Catholics and Protestants—so don’t throw that one in Catholic faces. The only difference is that since there are thousands of Protestant churches, more or less independent, there are no deep pockets to go after.
- Liberalism has run rampant, yes, but is running out of steam. The young Catholics are much more orthodox than their parents’ generation. The Church will survive liberalism as she has survived all the other heresies. However, the mainline Protestant denominations have fallen one by one…
