What about all those contradictions in the Bible?

So, if there’s a problem due to a scribal error, does the writing cease to be scripture due to that scribal error? I’ll give you time to get off your high horse and answer that question.

Personally, I haven’t seen any Christians suggest that there are actual errors or contradictions, just that there are things where we don’t know the answer.

Apparently you either cannot read or have not read; I only had to go through the first 4 posts of the thread to note what I originally stated. Perhaps you should open your eyes, then you can see what you “personally haven’t seen any Christians”, perhaps you meant the qualifier as “Christians”. That you may be correct; I don’t know. **

My personal opinion is that it didn’t happen, or, if it did happen, it did not happen chronologically where it appears in the Bible, or that it was simply an embellished story to teach a moral lesson. If the flood was global, why do we have records from existing civilizations before, during, and after this period? The history of human migrations is well documented, even if it is still being refined. It is impossible that the flood was universal (i.e. covered the whole earth, killed humans and animals except those on the ark, etc.).
**
What does “reverting” mean in your profile? The flood was global and killed all people and animals except those on the ark and I would suppose some marine animals. Assuming your assumption about archeological finds about other civilizations is correct; why would the finding of such artifacts necessarily be destroyed and hidden by a flood?**

What in the world are you talking about?

There was no flood that covered the entire planet. Didn’t happen. We’re not all descended from the three sons of Noah. When the “New World” was first discovered, it was populated. It had been populated continuously for probably tens of thousands of years. There was no worldwide flood that destroyed all life around 3000 BC. Period. Wait a second…you don’t think the earth is flat and the earth is 6000 years old, do you?

How do you understand the words of Jesus regarding this issue?

Curiously,
Mick
👍
The understanding does not change at all. It does not logically follow that Jesus believed in a literal flood that covered the planet because he referenced Noah. I’m not sure why there would be any need to force this understanding on the passage when Jesus constantly used fictional stories called parables to teach moral lessons about reality.

Fair enough.🙂

Grace and peace,

Do you consider yourself a Christian?
Yes.
If you believe and understand the Bible were you serious about leaning toward Catholicism?
I was definitely leaning toward Catholicism when I joined this forum but I’ve since felt much more drawn to Holy Orthodoxy.
I appreciate the explanation and and did not know what to make of it, but the explanation has some logic to it…thank you.
And thank you for the courteous way in which you made your inquiry.

In Christ,
Mick

**Have you ever been anywhere where there was not a rock with a marine fossil and/or sea shore sand?

I believe what the Bible teaches and the earth is between 6-10k years old. Just as God created Adam with age; he was not an infant; likewise he made the earth and the universe with age built in; probably just to get a chuckle on all those million of years folks.

If you go sticky by population growth models; the amount of time that man would be around would be about 6000 years. If it were hundreds of thousands of years we would have about 3 billion people per square foot.

I assume you do not believe the word of God; is that correct?**

Ok, seriously, what grade are you in, kid? 6th? 7th?

Point to the scripture and verse that you assume I don’t believe based on our “age of the earth” discussion.

I hate to point out something: genetic testing shows no genetic bottle neck when the flood should have occured. There would not be the diversity of species that we see today.

Would you be kind enough to connect what you’ve contributed above to a verse or passage in the Bible so as to make your point complete.

Respectfully,
Mick

You have been no where that doesn’t have fossilized sea shells or sand. It is really that simple.
The Bible teaches no such thing, and for the record, the earth is not millions of years old, but almost 5 billion. ** LOL…there is no way you could show that without some far reaching assumptions…LOL**
Give me an example of one of your “population growth models.” I’m willing to bet they all make some pretty ridiculous assumptions, and fail to take into account things like famines, plagues, natural disasters, and wars. And I would bet that those population growth models would not match reality in modern times for which we have correlating data to show what actually happened, for instance, population growth during the 19th century.
If you were to leave out the accounts of these disasters, then the number would what? grow or shrink?
Point to the scripture and verse that you assume I don’t believe based on our “age of the earth” discussion. I’m sorry; it is obvious you do not believe what the Bible says; otherwise there would be no discussion here…my apologies.
**Genesis 11 gives you the chronology from the Flood to Abraham. It starts out with the children of Noah…Shem, verse 10, goes right on down to Abraham, that’s 225 years. Okay? Six days, 1656 years, and 225 years…so something under 2000 years and you’re at Abraham.

Start in Genesis 12 with Abraham and go through the Old Testament historical books…Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles. Just proceed through those books and you have the chronology from Abraham to the Babylonian captivity…from Abraham to the Babylonian captivity…that would be 430 years in Egypt, 40 years in the wilderness, seven years conquering Canaan, 350 years of the Judges, 110 years of the United Kingdom under Saul, David and Solomon, 350 years under the divided kingdom of Judah and Israel, 70 years…350 years and then you have the Babylonian captivity, 70 years. And then you have the return and the rebuilding, 140 years. So, from Abraham to the return and rebuilding of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the nation Israel you have about 1500 or so years if you add all that up.

Following the rebuilding and the restoration, you’re at the end now of the Old Testament, you’ve got 400 years of silence. So you have about 2000 years, we sort of started out from the creation to Abraham is about 2000 years. From Abraham to the New Testament is about 200 years. And from the beginning of the New Testament to now is about 2000 years.

Archbishop James Usher, a great scholar, by the way, lived from 1581 to 1656, added all the genealogical chronological records of Scripture and said that he felt that the creation occurred in 4004 B.C. Now, you know, the evolutionists just mock that. The world, the universe…6000 years old? But he was no doubt very close to being accurate.

And prior to Charles Darwin, any educated man who suggested that mankind was over 6000 years old was seen as a fool. All historical records fit in to that 6000 years. You can go back and study European history, you can go back and study the records, the Egyptian records, and they all go back no further than that. You say, “Well isn’t it possible that some names got skipped in the genealogies?” That’s one of the things you hear all the time. “Isn’t it possible that some names got skipped?”

Let me tell you; one very hard thing to prove is what got left out. That is very hard to prove. How can you say some other name should be in there? If it’s not there, it’s not there. Even if you add a few names that God left out of the genealogy of 5 or the genealogy of chapter 11, the history of Israel, that’s set, we know that. And the times from Christ to now, we know that. So if you’re talking about that first period of time and you want to give a little space to the genealogies, well, you can add a few hundred years here and there. **

John and Mark say that the Roman soldiers clothed Jesus in a purple cloak but Mathew says it was scarlet.

This thread about the apparent contradictions in The Word has been sort of an interesting eye opener - esp. the ones not discussed popularly ( flood , resurrection and Passover ).

Find this esp. so with the symbolism and the diffrence in numbers regarding the baths - 2000 >< 3000 meausres; the context of the molten sea resting on the 12 oxen, the water in the baths - as an O.T type that prefigures the later revealed truths through the New Testamnent, could this not be a small and subtle sign of the Trinitarian truth , the movement of the water representing the flow of love between the Three persons and that there is not to be any contradiction between two or three ( the wording , even if meant to simply mean 2000 meausres , does not say ‘only’ 2000 meaures either , which does leave room for it to be 3000 as well ! )

As to the possibilty of a worldwide flood, the tsunami that happened not too long ago might be a good reminder as to how things that seem impossible can be very possible - an earthquake on a seafloor sending off tidal waves across continents ; if magnified by a 100 of those and the rains that come along with all that - a worldwide flood very easily possible !

Seems truthful geologists have enough on hand to support the biblical account of the flood .

As to the animals being designated as clean or unclean by Noah, very likely that God did not leave his family all alone in building that Ark but possibly stayed involved , guiding him through it all ( as He does the Ark of The Church in these days !)

As to Cain’s sacrifice not being accaeptable , good help would be again the New Testament and our Lord’s words - ’ when you come to offer your gifts, if you have anything against your brother …’ ; seems poor Cain had a hardened , hating heart that could not even hear the warning words of The Father !

The love and adherence to truth of our Jewish brethren (that includes our holy Apostles) has always been a point of admiration - thank God they were the ones entrusted with the sacred responsibility to convey The Word !

I hate to point out something: genetic testing shows no genetic bottle neck when the flood should have occured. There would not be the diversity of species that we see today.
I have always beleived that those who disbelieve in the Book of Mormon on DNA grounds will end up disbelieving in the Bible. I hate to be proved right time and again.
