I went to mass tonight and it was awesome. It was an EF mass and of course a lot of the women were covered.

I also noticed that I was the only womanwearing pants that I could see.

So the question is, do traditional catholic women wear only skirts to mass? Do they wear pants to other places?

Yes, I know everyone is different, but I just want to know if there is a norm.

Because I thought I left the “no pants” thing in the Pentecostal church!

Women see skirts are more traditional. But by no means are you forced to wear one if you don’t want to.

I have noticed that at the Novus Ordo mass the majority of the women wear pants and are dressed pretty casual. I wear pretty skirts and dresses, not real long or real short but above the knee and I feel like I am the only one who dresses up for mass 😦 I am very feminine and like to look like a lady. I also like to dress nice out of respect for God.

Wearing pants and dressing nicely are not mutually exclusive and I can assure you I look feminine whether I am wearing pants or skirts 🙂

Question for you: Do you wear pants outside of mass? Do you wear skirts when you go to a weekday mass or only on Sundays?

Thanks!

The way I have always viewed it is if you have the clothes (dresses for women, slacks for men, veil for women, and etc.) then why not wear them: especially if it’s the customs for that form of Mass or Rite. This type of attention and adherence to customs was one of the things I liked about the EF. I feel like it gives Catholics an outward identity if that makes sense?

This is just weird for me because I know there are evangelical congregations where you cannot wear pants to church. In some, a woman can’t wear pants period.

It never occurred to me this type of thing existed in the Catholic Church.

Now granted, I have no problem wearing a skirt or dress for Sunday mass, but having come from work wearing slacks, I was just wondering if the custom of the women who attend the EF mass at that parish, is to always wear skirts.

I also noticed their style is very conservative.

Now you know where they got it from lol:thumbsup:

When coming from work, going to work or coming from lunch, I really wouldn’t stress yourself out too much about the dress. The important thing is that you went to Mass. However if your able to have the time to dress up in what you know is the norm for Mass attire then I would recommend doing so out of respect. I like to think this is the view most EF Mass goers have regarding this issue. I know I wouldn’t want you missing Mass just because you forgot your skirt or because you didn’t have time to change your attire.

I’d say that wearing skirts, particularly long skirts, is pretty popular with woman who go to EF Masses. I belong to a diocesan Latin Mass Community and I’d say about 3/4 of the women wear skirts to Mass and about half of those wear skirts full time. I think that those percentages would be higher at FSSP parishes. If you think back to 1962 most of the women were wearing skirts so I think it makes sense that a congregation who loves the 1962 missal would follow a lot of the cultural practices of Catholics from that time period and earlier as well. Personally I love wearing a skirt and feel much more feminine in one than I do in pants.

Some traditional Catholic women believe a skirt is more modest. I can see this point of view, but also think a nice (not too tight) pair of dress slacks with a conservative top is acceptable, especially if you are coming from work to a weekday Mass or something. I think the big thing is not to show up in a pair of tight fitting skinny jeans and a lowcut/tight fitting top (things I’ve actually seen at NO masses).

A handful of women at my Extraordinary Form (EF) parish wear pants although in the town at which I live still has an old, albeit unenforced law making it illegal for women to wear pants in public!
Do they wear pants to other places?
I have seen some who wear dresses and skirts at my parish wear pants outside of Mass.

Some places have placards outside the church mandating it, but it is very rare. Veils are not mandated by Canon Law anymore, but read what Card. Burke wrote about women wearing veils at EF Masses:http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jpAsI3O3_...AAHS8/k6cZQkFteiM/s1600/burke+veil+letter.jpg

Hopefully they’re wearing something :o
