What about President Bush supporting the death penalty?

I was explaining and defending The Catholic point of view as to why we are not in favor of President Obama being the commencement speaker at THE Catholic university, Notre Dame. I was doing OK (I thought) until someone said—* Well Bush was in favor of the death penalty and they let him speak*. How could I have explained that?

The death penalty can be allowed for the greater good of society in certain circumstances. One can be a good Catholic and be in favor of the death penalty. One cannot be a good Catholic and be in favor of abortion which takes the lives of INNOCENT children.
