Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple to present him when he was 40 days old. They also took two turtledoves as an offering.
Where would Joseph have gotten these two turtledoves? I’m guessing they are doves like the ones we have around here… Maybe he would have bought them at the temple. But is there a chance he caught them on his own (they were poor and didn’t have money.) Were the doves available around the farms in the area?

Most likely. But there was a racket at the Temple. Animals and birds had to be without blemish – if you brought your own sacrifice, it had to be inspected. If it didn’t pass – too bad.

But you could buy a pre-inspected bird or animal at the temple.

The same thing was true with money – government money with an image was not acceptable. You had to buy acceptable money, and the money-changers made a pretty profit.

It was this kind of thing that led Jesus to take a rope to the people dealing in the Temple courtyard.

The 2 turtledoves was precisely the offering of the parents of low means. The rich brought a turtledove and a one-year old lamb, the latter being for the temple sacrifice.

So, everybody brought a turtledove? Are they the same as doves we have here in USA?

Wow and thank you… the doves in Israel are certainly beautiful birds!

You’re welcome. I thought they were beautiful as well and probably a good motivator to avoid sin and remember our human frailty.

I would be extra sad if I had to sacrifice a turtle dove for my sin. The thought of it would make me more conscientious of my actions for sure. 🙈🙉🙊

There was also the issue with unlawful tax and the type of coin to be used to pay that tax.
