What about the gates of hell?

My question refers to Jesus saying the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church. If we understand hell to be the final place of judgement for the wicked, and not a kingdom that fights against the Kingdom of God, I am confused why Jesus would use hell in such a reference, knowing He knows Hell is not a kingdom run by Satan. Can you shed some light on this for me? Thank you.

“The gates of hell” is not to be taken literally. Jesus is simply saying that Satan loses. Hell does not have to be a kingdom for Satan to cause trouble for us. We all see evidence that he certainly does. But Satan will never overcome the Church that Jesus founded!
