I would like to ask Fr. Vincent Serpa this question:

I am a little confused on the HPV shot. When my daughter was 12 or 13, my pediatrician recommended giving her the HPV shot. I thought it was absurd to offer a young girl this shot. I refused. He is a Catholic physician. He told me that in addition to offering it to young girls, it would soon be offered to young boys. That was five years ago. Now it is being offered to my son.

What are your thoughts on this shot? Thank you father.

Dear friend,

It sounds like the shot is given as a preventative measure. But since HPV is transmitted by genital activity, the shot should not be necessary for Catholic teenagers who are chaste.

Fr, Vincent Serpa, O.P.
