I was discussing the events of 11th September 2001 the other day, and the point came up about the approximately 200 people in the building who chose to jump. From my reading of the Catechism, they had chosen to take their own lives, and in a way that was negative and direct. Given this, have they committed mortal sin by their actions?

Dear friend,

It is hard to say because we don’t know their state of mind at the time. Their decisions had to have been the result of a very pressured anxious thought process. When one is extremely frightened, it is very, very difficult to think straight. May they rest in Him.
