I dont understand-what was the exscuse for this travesty?

**Edward Cardinal Egan of NYC ordered this?!! Why? There has to be an explaination. **

There is definitely something wrong with this. Looks like someone is falsely trying to make a point by using pictures out of context. The second picture looks like it came from the middle of a rennovation. Where is the final results? What is the real story?

I went out to the site and all I saw are slander and innuendos againt Cardinal Egan. Looks like a person with an agenda.

I do not like to see beautiful churches destroyed, either.

But I would advise you, Iohannes, that the website you link to has a certain mood that I would not call conducive to getting a real discussion going with your archbishop.

You may not like Cardinal Egan, but he is the archbishop, and a Lord of the Holy Roman Church, and thus deserves to be addessed and referred to in a certain way.

You may get further, and attract more people to your cause, by changing the tone of the website.

I do wish you well in trying to save the older churches.

Pax tecum.

Interesting web site. It doesn’t appear to be put up by a true Christian. There’s no mention of following Christ’s instruction for dealing with sinful behavior (approach the person first, if that doesn’t work, take another; if that doesn’t work, go to a church authority . . . etc). It even uses foul language. Personally, I wouldn’t trust anything on this site to be factual.

I think I would maybe agree with you, as I could not find out anything on his website, but did on this link from his site. Here

I agree with Iohannes (I’m sure he’s feeling a little faint as a result). This is egregious. A church CAN be deconsecrated, I think is the term, for profane use (profane here not meaning “bad,” but “secular.”) I think, however, that we should be EXTRAORDINARILY careful about that. Some of these are of historical value, not to mention their incredible spiritual value. And the Altar should have been removed and protected from desecration, not smashed! The old ones are often used as reredoes behind the squared altars used today or as altars of repose/shrine altars. This seems harsh!

Don’t most older altars have relics placed inside of them as well? Hope this altar didn’t

I wish these guys would realize that churches should not change because of new architectural fads. If they want a new church- fine- they can build one- but they shouldn’t destroy what people worked hard to make, and pay for. It’s like someone gives someone a nice item of some sort as a gift, then they destroy it (not give it away so that others can enjoy it even if they don’t want it- they simply ruin it for everyone in the name of their own interests). It’s a slap in the face, and a rejection of a blessing God has bestowed on them through the person/people who gave to them.

Has anyone verified that the altar was actually destroyed? We may be getting upset over rumors and hearsay.

What about NEW St. Peter’s in the Vatican?

Since many Bishops and Priests see any link with tradition as being harmful to the new era of spring in the Church, I am neither surprised or shocked at this particular desecration. All too often in the name of progress and ecumenism such travesties have occurred. Remember the protestants in Europe, particularly in England took graet pride and glee in destroying any and all traces of the Catholic faith that they could duing the reformation. After all, one could hardly eat supper at an altar. As for the relic in the altar, they probably threw it the trash since it represented something totally non biblical and offensive to non Catholics. Excuse me, separated brethen. I feel like crying sometimes.

From what I can gather, it looks like the parish was closed. If so, they probably took the altar and other fixtures out of the church. This is looking more and more like sour grapes by someone.

Showing disrespect to Catholic clergy. If the issue can be addressed in a more charitable way, and without being deceiving, do so. But not on this thread.
