Saint Padre Pio’s Stay with me Lord
Sacred Heart of Jesus

I consider Jesus’s demonstration of a prayer to the apostles as one of example.
Except, again, that’s not what other writings from Apostolic times indicated. For instance, the Didache, which could have even come from one or more of the Apostles themselves, stated:
…as the Lord commanded in his Gospel, pray thus: “Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, as in Heaven so also upon earth; give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debt as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into trial, but deliver us from the Evil One, for thine is the power and the glory for ever.” Pray thus three times a day.
-Didache 8:2-3
Do you not think God knows what is in your heart?
Sure, but if simply being on our heart is good enough, why pray at all?
I can imagine God is more pleased with individual effort and sincerity than the use of another’s colorful language for intimate discourse with him.
I don’t see it as either/or. Yes, he appreciates our personal prayers. But even in recited prayers, I’d imagine He’s pleased to hear us making an effort to pray. He also probably appreciates the humility in seeking help from others and loves that we find beauty in the prayers brought about by His work in others’ lives.

It’s the same with song. Sure, we could write our own song to sing to God, and I’d imagine He appreciates that. We could also sing to Him a Psalm or other song, and I’d imagine He appreciates that.
All of scripture favors individualism in salvation.
I think it would be an understatement to say that there is a heavy dose of Enlightenment tinting to that lens.

These are some of my favorites:
  1. This is a prayer to St. Joseph that is extremely old.
    O Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires. O Saint Joseph, do assist me by thy powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your Heavenly power I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most Loving of Fathers. O Saint Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. Saint Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for us. Amen
  2. This is a prayer that was composed by St. Bernard after he asked Jesus which would caused Him the most suffering and He told him that it was the wound on His shoulder that was caused by carrying the immense weight of his Cross:
    O Loving Jesus, meek Lamb of God, I, miserable sinner, salute and worship the most Sacred Wound of Thy Shoulder on which Thou didst bear Thy heavy Cross, which so tore Thy flesh and laid bare Thy Bones as to inflict on Thee an anguish greater than any other wound of Thy Most Blessed Body. I adore Thee, O Jesus most sorrowful; I praise and glorify Thee, and give Thee thanks for this most sacred and painful Wound, beseeching Thee by that exceeding pain, and by the crushing burden of Thy heavy Cross to be merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me all my mortal and venial sins, and to lead me on towards Heaven along the Way of Thy Cross. Amen
  3. This is a prayer to say to your Guardian Angel when you cannot attend Mass:
    Go, my Angel Guardian dear,
    To church for me, the Mass to hear.
    Go, kneel devoutly at my place
    And treasure for me every grace.
    And at the Offertory time
    Please, offer me to God Divine.
    All that I have and all that I am,
    Present it with the Precious Lamb.
    Adore for me the great Oblation.
    Pray for all I hold most dear
    Be they far or be they near.
    Remember too, my own dear dead
    For whom Christ’s Precious Blood was shed.
    And at Communion bring to me
    Christ’s Flesh and Blood, my food to be,
    To give me strength and holy grace,
    A pledge to see Him face to face.
    And when the Holy Mass is done,
    Then, with His blessing, come back home. Amen

1] From the Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence

Lord either give me this thing I so ardently desire so I will be happy, or make me so happy without it that I will no longer desire it, for it doesn’t matter how I’m happy.

The reason I’m praying this prayer is because it’s hard to have good desires when they’re not being fulfilled. Praying that God will take away these desires if they’re not gonna happen anyway.

2] O Jesus King of Love, I trust in Thy merciful goodness.

3] Litany of Trust

4] Litany of Humility

Great point! Similar to those arguments that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is unnecessary because God knows what is in our hearts. Clearly not, or He wouldn’t have provided the Sacrament to us.

It’s sad that a thread asking a simple question about “favorite prayers” had to be derailed by someone arguing about how to pray/ the concept of praying. At least make your own thread if you want to go way off topic with that stuff.

Any prayer in Latin–the Pater Noster, Ave Maria, Salve Regina, Sancte Michael Archangele, etc. And the Abwoon d’Bashmaya (Aramaic). Love to sing that one. Also some Celtic Christian prayers.

Yes, it is sad to derail a thread about prayer. I want to thank you for sharing information about the 54 day Rosary. in other threads.

Thank you for this reminder not to engage with people seeking to derail threads. It can be easy to get swept away in the moment.

As for favourite prayers, I will say that I am loving the Novena to Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. Incredibly beautiful and powerful Novena, and based on the Rosary, which is another favourite.

Yeah, sorry for letting myself get caught up in it.

To (hopefully) make up, I found this really beautiful prayer today from my prayer app on iOS:
Haste, my Mother, run to help me;
Mother, haste, do not delay;
See from Hell the envious serpent
Comes my trembling soul to slay.

Ah! his very look affrights me,
And his cruel rage I fear;
Whither fly, if he attacks me?
See him, see him coming near!

Lo! I faint away with terror,
For if yet thou dost delay,
He will dart at me his venom;
Then, alas! I am his prey.

Cries and tears have nought availed me,
Spite of all I see him there;
Saints I call till I am weary.
Still he stands with threatening air.

Now his mighty jaws are open,
And his forked tongue I see;
Ah! he coils to spring upon me,
Mother! hasten, make him flee.

Mary! yes, the name of Mary
Strikes with dread my cruel foe;
Straight he flees as from the sunbeam
Swiftly melts the winter’s snow.

Now he’s gone; but do thou ever
Stay beside me, Mother dear;
Then the hellish fiend to tempt me
Never more will venture near.

Setarcos, I’ve flagged every one of your recent posts, the one because you called another poster irksome, and the others because there is a TOS rule against extremely long multi-post responses. It appears that you are making a concerted effort to disrupt this thread because the entire subject you are arguing about is off topic from the topic of the thread, which is simply asking people to list Favorite Prayers.

I asked you to go make another thread if you wanted to argue or discuss this and you ignored that suggestion. Your posting behavior on this thread really suggests you are acting in bad faith. Kindly stop derailing threads with off topic arguments.

How about the one that is unique and sincere from the one doing the praying. If you repeat someone else’s prayer it is no longer a prayer its a contemplative meditation.
My one simple post…I was hoping someone would have posted a personal prayer they’ve made that they like to pray, perhaps at meals or before going to work, or at bedtime. Like sharing some poetry they’ve written. Instead I get attacked, ridiculed, insulted, and flagged?! ZMYstiCat responded to my post as if to have a discussion of our beliefs. Cordial and undisruptive. Other posters spiraled it out of control. Tis_Bearself if you can put aside your self righteous attitude, you should apologize to me. Its clear you’ve not even taken the time to see what was original posted by me and the responses I received. Since you’ve had interaction with me before which was perhaps irritating to you I believe you’ve merely singled me out for that reason.

Prayer is always a personal communion with God. I don’t think there is a right or wrong way. It is about intent and giving all glory to God. Pray peacefully and with love.

Oh No! Did you call someone 'irksome?" How awful! However, I will say shorter posts are easier for me to digest and maybe respond to.
