she will still be considered a devout, practicing Catholic.
There are other factors that need to be considered first.
Well, yes. I didn’t want to try to list them because if I missed one I’d get called on it. But basically, go to Mass, go to Confession. Follow the rules. You don’t need to do any of the extra-curriculars.

My mom belongs to a larger parish but it is mostly old people. Anyhow, I am not a member but It is a great place to do one-stop shopping if you want to be involved in certain charities that help the poor, the grieving, etc. I actually met with the pastor to see if there would be any objection to an agnostic like me joining some of their different service groups even though I don’t attend mass or the religious events. He completely welcomed me and told me I am always welcome. I suppose it may vary from parish to parish and maybe I just found a good one. I would just be up-front about who you are and why you are there and go from there. I hope you have a good experience.

engage in conversation but it isn’t expected of you.
Most of the time I explicitly don’t want to engage in conversation. I want to:
  1. walk out,
  2. smile,
  3. say, “Have a nice week, Father,”
  4. get in my car; and
  5. go home to eat breakfast.
My wife is usually willing to stop and chat with other parents to discuss “important” stuff, like kids going to college, planning for kids to go to college, talk to the people in charge of scheduling altar servers, etc. etc. etc.

I smile pleasantly, hang on the edges of the discussion group, and look for an opening to:
  1. walk out,
  2. smile,
  3. say, “Have a nice week, Father,”
  4. get in my car; and
  5. go home to eat breakfast.
When an event is over, it. is. over. Whether a work meeting, a movie, a play, a concert, a party, a Mass, whatever. When it’s over, I close up, shut down, and walk out. There is no, “I-need-to-talk-to-him-when-this-is-over” inclination in me at all. Time’s up, I’m outta here.
