A point came up in passing in a thread on vows -

  • that such a thing as confirmation promises exists.
Can I get a text of it somewhere to “revise from” as it is a very long way back and wasn’t gone into in detail anyway.
If Confirmation is received separately from Baptism, the Baptismal promises are renewed:

Do you reject Satan, all his evil works, empty promises, etc. (I’m paraphrasing here.)

In the Western Church, the custom is that confirmation be received near to the age of full reason. New promises are not made; however, the confirmand, restating his baptismal vows, makes the promises of his baptism definite, and through their presenting themselves for the sacrament tells God that he will definitely bring what was included as a necessary part in those baptismal vows to a successful issue.

As others have stated, what one actually doing is renewing the Baptismal promises since the presumption is that the parents and godparents made the promises on behalf of the infant/child being baptised. Before receiving confirmation, the candidate should profess, before the minister confirming him/her, that they reject the devil, sin and the world as well as that they believe what the Church believes and teaches to be revealed by God.

The Diocese of Des Moines in the United States has posted this resource online and you may read here the whole rite of confirmation as well the instructions for the rite, which are very rich and helpful.

Thanks everybody that’s great to be getting on with! Now I can have a “refresher”!
