It is a penitential service held for a cluster of parishes in an area. (Together they make up a deanery, and several deaneries together make up a diocese). The service is led by one priest and containes readings, prayers and hymns. At the end of the liturgy, several priests (sometimes more than a dozen) hear individual confessions. Due to clerical shortages, sometimes parishes within a deanery pool their resources like this, so that people can make their confessions, especially before Christmas and Easter.
