What are the Eastern Orthodox Meditation Beads and why does the Roman Catholic Church warn us against them?

Please someone answer me, I have a very close friend who has been asked by his Spiritual Director to do this and I feel like it is the Devil Planting dangerous seeds to attack him with…!!!

The beads the Orthodox use are for the repetition of the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Amen. I should think the Catholic Church would encourage such devotion. God bless!

Beads? They are typically knots. Knotted prayer ropes.

The *chotki *(Eastern/Central Europe) and komboskini (Greek) are commonly prayed by Eastern Catholics. Many Latin Rite Catholics pray them as well, with no prohibition or warning from the Catholic Church – Roman Rite or otherwise.

For your question, I don’t know the answer, but I was wondering what makes you think this is the “Devil Planting”?
 
Ryan is correct. The Eastern Orthodox pray the Jesus Prayer, on the Rosary beads.

Perhaps you’re confusing these with beads the Buddhist use?

I was not aware the Catholic Church opposed the use of CHOTKI. The concept is simple. To pray always. To start with any prayer you prefer (although the “Jesus Prayer” tends to be preferred), and use the beads at all times to recite the prayer.

The idea is that, after awhile, the prayer becomes internalized.

I do somewhat the same thing with the “Glory be”.

Now it may be the case that some Catholics are leary of this Orthodox practice, under the “not invented here syndrome”. 🤷

Orthodox prayer ropes are typically used to pray the Jesus Prayer. Certainly the Catholic Church has nothing against that.

The church doesn’t warn against the beads, but against unsupervised hesychastic prayer… as do the Orthodox themselves. My spiritual director of 15 years ago started me on just 150x “Lord Have Mercy” plus two metanoias (start and end), and then adding the the Trisagion and Threfold cries for mercy at the ends.

Now, the church does warn against Buddhist prayer beads, and other sects prayer beads.

But the church does not proscribe the Chotki… only hesychastic prayer without guidance of a spiritual director using it.

That is incorrect, these are the precursor of the rosary beads and are still in use in the Eastern Catholic Churches.

They are used to pray the 150 psalms, as well as many chaplets and the Jesus prayer (Jesus Christ, son of the living God and Saviour, have mercy on us). It is spiritually very beneficial.

I think everyone here is curious as to why you believe is the work of the “Devil Planting dangerous seeds.” Is it because someone who isn’t part of an apostolic church told you so? Or is it because you think the Orthodox prayer beads are not valid?

No, they don’t.

They don’t typically use beads or a rosary.

They use a knotted rope.

One of the Orthodox priests I’ve met uses nice little beads, with larger knots at 33 and some other asymmetric point.

It’s not always a knotted cord, just most commonly one.
