I have recently found out that my husband of 13 years had a vasectomy 5.5 years ago after our 3rd child was born. I believe he did this out of deperation because we were living with my parents at that time and our financial situation was extremely bleak at that time. Since then I was under the impression that we were successfully practicing nfp. We have since started counseling with a Catholic therapist. My husband was not raised with nor does he have now a very strong Faith. He does attend Mass and participates in a weekly family Rosary when he is home(which due to his work is extremely rare). He has agreed at some point to go to confession but the oppurtunity has not come up. I myself while still getting to mostly daily Mass and some Eucharistic Adoration have not been able to go because (well, Im not sure) Iam struggling mightily with all this. I guess my main question is, if the Marriage does get repaired and we resume marital relations, will they be sinful since they are no longer open to new life? I feel quite certain that a reversal is not in the picture. If he does do to confession and receives absolution where will we stand. I also feel a very strange sense of relief regarding the fact that I no longer will have to do the “work”(for lack of a better word) of nfp. Or maybe we will not ever be able to resume relations. Im very confused. I hope this makes sense to someone I need help, please.

Dear mks,

Your husband does need to go to Confession. He is not required to have the vasectomy reversed. It is a complicated process that is often not successful and can leave the man with the lack of bladder and/or bowel control. You both are free to resume marital relations which will not be considered sinful.
