Galileo did something that Copernicus didn’t; he made a religious claim, specifically a claim that God was not omnipotent.

What are Pentecostals? I know they’re a Protestant Denomination but are they more “normal” like Baptists and Lutherans or “different” in terms of theology like JW’s and LDS? I haven’t heard much about them until recently and realized I don’t know so much about them. And **what do they think of things like the Real Presence and other Catholic traditions? **Thanks ahead of time.

Abuse? Heck no, they were actually really nice, not horrible at all. I just didn’t understand what they were doing, so I didn’t know how to react.

…a little off topic…I attended a Mother’s Day service with my Aunt at her Pentecostal church many years ago, and it **scared the everlivin’ out of me **when the lady sitting next to me jumped up waving her whole body and yelled random sounds, then a guy from the other side of me started crying and ‘translating’. I had no idea what to do, so I just sat there and looked straight forward. My aunt should have warned me, and that was mean of her to set me up like that

When I was a child it was a joke among me and my friends from church that whenever any of us invited someone that never attended a Pentecostal service things would be interesting to say the least. I remember before as a kid praying something like…

“God, please let the service be good, but please not too much speaking in tongues, or running in the aisles, dancing in the spirit, lots of people falling out from being slain… I love those things but I don’t want to scare my friend away.”

It never failed, bring a new person and the service would be fantastic (for us Pentecostals) and go on for hours! However, I could never be too sure what our guest were thinking. Some ended up liking it and wanted to come back others were scared away or just confused and some whom never really felt the presence of the Lord in a service were downright upset about things I felt sorry for them.

On a side note, of those who visit a Pentecostal church the reactions to a service based on their affiliation at the time could be a bit predictable. Visiting Catholics often seemed to enjoy and get something out of a service, they found it very different but good. (I guess it’s similar to my reaction to mass, it was different than what I had grown up with but I still liked it, a lot!) Knowing what I know now, I can see why. Even though I can’t take part in the Eucharist I can still feel the presence of the Lord just being at mass, just like I can when at a great Pentecostal service. I could list a lot more but I figured I would just go over this because it would be more relevant to the readers of this site. I will say the most confused, and negative reactions in my opinion generally came from those whom were raised with Calvinist based beliefs (such as a Presbyterians)

I will post a bit more about Pentecostals in a few, and share some more information if you like. I am not trying to convert anyone here (other than myself, I am here to learn more and share information because I have a interest in Catholicism)

Like many other posters here, I was reared by Pentecostals. Your mileage may vary ENORMOUSLY on how “normal” they are, but by and large they’re impeccably Nicene Christians (though they wouldn’t understand the term), doctrinally no more distant from Catholicism than most Baptists. I use the word “doctrinally” advisedly, because they tend to see doctrinal rigor–and theology in general–as a species of Pharasaism.

Most Catholic traditions and doctrines, including the Real Presence, are so alien and unknown to them that you couldn’t even say they really oppose them. (I was an adult before I heard of the Nicene Creed, sacraments, or the existence of Lent, Epiphany, or any other religious seasons/holidays other than Easter and Christmas!) Generally, though, when a Pentecostal is made aware of any Catholic traditions, they get a pretty chilly, suspicious reception.

I’ve watched a few Pentecostal raves on Youtube. More like a disco then a Church.

I really doubt that this “slain in the spirit” is actually from God, but the persons own imagination and action, although believing it is from God.

You’re exactly right! After it was explained to me I was totally fine with it because I understood what it was all about. When I invite people to Mass I kinda joke with them like, “Get ready for your morning aerobics,” so they know there will be a lot of up and down…I just wish my aunt would have warned me, I think I would have enjoyed the service more that way…they really were great people.
