Honestly, for me it was the Bible. I read it through once cover to cover and got barely anything out of it but doubts and questions, so I left it went to a million other books. But then I came back to it.
I sat down and started to read it slowly and in depth. I pick a book, say Genesis, and read it beginning to end. I highlight the overarching point of each verse, I highlight repeated phrases or ideas, the names and places. Then I take a look at the notes from the Oxford Study Bible and the Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible which helps me to understand anything I didn’t, clarify some things and help me to see things I might have missed.
I have had so many lightning bolt moments I have lost count and I feel like I could read it 1000 more times and still find new things. There is such absolute beauty to be found there and it’s like it’s full of all these tiny little messages that you just might not see unless you’re looking for them. I never believed in the Bible being written with any help from the Holy Spirit until I read it this way but I certainly do now. The quality of the writing, the patterns, the hidden gems etc. I just look at it and think how did they do that so cleverly so many years ago. It’s like a puzzle in some ways.
For example, when I was reading about Leah, every time God gave her a child her response was to think that this time Jacob will love me, this child will make him love me. But, when she gave birth to Judah, she didn’t say any of that, she only thanked God for his blessing. Her focus was on God, not herself and not Jacob. And that birth gave her Judah who despite being the fourth in the line of succession became the son to carry on the covenant with God and the line to David. Granted his brothers did some pretty bad things (as did he) that could have been the reason for them not being the successor and Leah later reverted to her focus on Jacob loving her and competitiveness with Rachel but, I just think it’s amazing that when she praises God and focuses on him, he gives her Judah.
Disclaimer: I’ve only been a Christian for a couple of years and have only been reading the bible this way for a very short time, my knowledge wouldn’t fill a thimble and I find myself very frequently wrong
Also, reading the Church fathers has been pretty amazing.
