Assuming you’re interested in traditional Catholic music in general and not just chant, I have a special place in my heart for the album The Essential Tallis Scholars. The Scholars are an unbelievable Renaissance polyphonic group and that album, which includes the famous “Miserere Mei Deus” by Allegri, is a great starting place for their work. Another must have is Cantate Domino, which is a recording from the Sistine Chapel Choir, and really works wonders on the soul. Mix of chant and polyphony. And it’s the choir of the Holy Father! The album Benedicta, from the Benedictines of Norica, is a fantastic album of Marian chant. It’s deeply moving. And you’re supporting some of the coolest monks around

I also recommend the recordings from the choirs of Notre Dame de Paris. I was lucky enough to attend a concert in the cathedral, and it was sublime. Last but not least, the recordings of the choirs of the incredible St. John Cantius parish in Chicago. Straight from the church voted the most beautiful in America due to its incredible architectue, solemn liturgies in both forms, and aptly their sacred music program, all their work is quite beautiful. Specifically, the CD Miserere is wonderful. It’s a collection of music for Holy Week. They can be found on
birettabooks.com. They really prove that any parish can have beautiful and solemn sacred music, as the parish was once on the chopping block but was brought back from the edge… It’s an amazing story. There’s a video on their main website that details it. But I digress
Hopefully this helps you get even more of a taste for the musical tradition of our faith! God Bless!
