That song was not written by the Who. I think it was an old blues song that the Who used because the lyrics fit within the context of the storyline.
Rather than being inspiring, I thought the lyrics to this song bordered on being blasphemous.

It was rock and pop that was largely responsible for my return to the Catholic Church. I find many of the lyrics to contain special meaning. But sorry to bore you.

This was a most influential song to me in that it caused me to leave a Protestant church I was attending and return to the Catholic faith. Great song. Paul McCartney insists it was written to honor his real mother, Mary, but we all know different!

Music has had a most profound effect on me throughout my life. I recently, however, deleted all the rock, pop, blues and jazz from my playlist and now all I listen to is a ton of non-stop classical (many Masses and lots of Gregorian Chants) and religious music.

For me, the lyrics in rock music caused me to return to the Catholic Church. It had spiritual insight. I found that rock music was closely related to religion, but in a covert, hidden sort of way.
