John 1:12 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

There are millions of them.

‘By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you; abide in my love’ John 15:8-9

That’s a good one.

I ask because sometimes I need more of them in my prayer.

“I will break the teeth of the wicked.”

“Vengeance is mine, I will repay.”

“It is a frightful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

No, why would you think that?

God’s Justice gives me hope.

The Dread Judge is terrible indeed.

Well, if you are into vengeance… I suppose they are affirming.

How about these…

2 Timothy 1:7 “God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

and…

Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

Love those!

And my favorite of all…

Galatians 5: 22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

If I do ANY of those things (I love God and others, I am kind toward others, I speak with gentleness, I control myself, I forbear others’ burdens with patience, I am faithful in prayer and in deed, etc.), I am in the right, for there is NO law against them!

Try to make a law FORBIDDING those things and I will BREAK it every time!😉

These things should be our standards, as Catholics, as Christians, and even just as general human beings, but they are standards not often lived up to, sadly…

*God’s Vengeance.

Big difference between being “into vengeance” and trusting in God’s Vengeance and Wrath.

The Wrath of God, his Vengeance, eternal torment in hell, God’s Justice, Judgment, the Dreadful Day - these are all perennial teachings of the Church, infallible aspects of the Deposit of Faith. To deny them is to be a heretic. To shy away from them so as to not offend modern sensibilities is theological cowardice.

As someone who’s suffered much injustice in this life, knowing Perfect Justice will be dispatched in the next is very comforting to me.

Scripture is jampacked with this imagery, and Jesus loved to preach about it. There are entire Psalms called imprecatory Psalms praying for God’s Justice.

God’s Mercy without God’s Justice is false mercy and unjust.

We know that there is justice for the Wicked. God will take His vengeance on them. We should also temper that by crying out and showing love when we see injustices in this world, as there are many of those, as well and many poor and suffering people out there. Even as Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

And when we have suffered injustices ourselves, we are more likely to be compassionate and loving to others who have suffered the same fates! In my case, I know that’s true!

Matt 15:20b
While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.
Who wouldn’t want to get to Heaven after having been given this image of the Father by Jesus ?

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
