I loved the History Channels “The Bible” a few years ago. I thought Noah was good. Was interesting the portrayal of the Watchers, who aren’t even really much in the Bible, though are very much talked about in the Book of Enoch. I didn’t care for Exodus: God’s and Kings at all.

The greatest story ever told
The bible
Jesus of Nazereth
AD

I recently watched the series The Young Pope. The message in it raises the bar right back up there to putting God first. In a very modern Arthouse way.

My dogs go nuts over the Noah section of The Bible. They actually sit and watch it.

Ben hur ( the classic)

The Ten Commandments
Jesus Christ Superstar
Risen (this one was recommended by a priest during a homily so I checked it out and it was great; I recommend it to anyone who hasn’t already seen it as it just came out last year)

Thanks for your thoughts on Risen. I will also check it out.

I also like Jesus Christ Superstar. It’s a favorite of mine.

even though the critics panned it, i thought Left Behind was pretty interesting

To be honest, there aren’t that many to choose from. Sometimes, there is the odd low-budget film that comes along, but these are not widely available. I have seen some for sale in shops connected to religious communities. Some on YouTube.

I didn’t like Risen. I thought the portrayal of Mary was insensitively done in front of the Cross. I also thought that various areas weren’t treated with particular attention to Scripture. I thought some of the acting was convincing and there were messages in there that were of note.

Jesus Christ Superstar was very good.

There is a film about St. Francis - the old one - that is quite good. There is a film about St. Pio that is good, but these are not Biblical, of course.

The Robe was good. But I preferred the book.

Typing into Google, there appear to be many; however, a lot of the films are dated and the only modern ones we have, while they are expressions of faith on the part of some, I don’t feel really hold up that well from a Catholic viewpoint.

I have never really found a film that I found to be particularly satisfying. Even JCS, despite being fun to watch, for me, does not bring everything together in all things Catholic. Though there was strength found in some areas.

The Passion of the Christ, I used to like, but now see problematic areas that do not sync with what I understand of Scripture. There are some good moments, such as Jesus and Mary joking together when He had just finished making a table, when Mary was asking if He was hungry. That scene was delightful. Although I do think that Mary’s holiness is always under-valued when expressed and Jesus is never quite authoritative enough even though He did not grasp equality as a thing to be grasped - He would have been meek and gentle but still had presence. That is not to say that I thought those particular people who played Jesus in these films did a bad job - no way, the performances are often awesome - but rather, the presence wasn’t there to some degree in the scripts and general character writing.

Not running the efforts down - apart from The Last Temptation of Christ - but merely expressing sadness that there is nothing out there which really grasps all the nuances and subtleties, and meditative value, of The Word of God. Somehow, they always fail to grasp that mystical level to the faith.

There was a Bible series about Jesus called Son of God that had strong moments.

**Passion of the Christ

The Ten Commandments

The Bible**

ICXC NIKA.

The Robe
The Ten Commandments
Barabbas
I second all of these, especially The Ten Commandments (1956 Charlton Heston version). Also The Passion of the Christ is a good one for Holy Week, it is exceptionally violent, but that is also historically accurate.

There is a series of about a dozen films done by Lux/Rai media including one with Ben Kingsley as Moses. Lots of Old Testament themes – most of those are extremely good. The only exceptions, the first (Genesis) and the last (Jesus) should be avoided for poor quality. I think it’s called Bible Stories Collection. Excellent quality.
Also, from the same producers Paul the Apostle.

Quo Vadis

I liked the TV series The Bible is good (kind of adult theme) and the follow up AD The Bible Continues – contemporary versions of Bible stories.

There’s a remake of Ten Commandments (Hallmark TV) that was pretty good. Nothing can match the original but still good.

The Story of Ruth. I like that one.

I might add The Song of Bernadette to my list.

Does that count as Biblical themed? It does have to do with Mary.

Kind of difficult to make a dramatic film without a single biblical theme in it.

Hands down…The Passion of the Christ. When Jesus is chained below and Mary is above Him. When Peter falls at Mary’s feet sobbing. When Mary goes out to Jesus when He falls carrying the Cross. And at the Cross when Mary begs Jesus to take her with Him. These scenes make me cry every time. Cannot wait for Mel Gibson’s follow-up.

I just recently listened to a sermon on YouTube from Sensus Fidelium and the priest said an exorcist friend of his claims a lot of demonic problems have been brought in through Harry Potter.

East Of Eden. It’s basically a modernization of the story of Cain and Abel.

The problem, is that the Harry Potter films teach children that witchcraft, can be a good thing. Also, some of the spells, are apparently ones that have been used for witchcraft. And if any have been used in witchcraft then this means they are oaths to satan. And if the spells have been taken from places of witchcraft that uses such spells and the places from which they were taken have gone through some kind of binding ritual, then we have a widespread issue on our hands.

I thought there was a Biblical film with Paul Newman or at least one that was based around an artifact that was present during the Crucifixion (similar kind of plot to The Robe)?!

I like the movie Signs about the main character losing his faith in God and then
finding it again.

The film with Paul Newman was “The Silver Chalice”. I believe it was his film debut. He was nominated for a Golden Globe but he thought his performance was really bad and the film is also considered by some critics to be really badly made. I can’t remember if I have seen it or not but having read the negative reviews I’m curious to see it again.
