What are the basic requirements for religious life?

A little expert advice from my friends on CAF.

I’m reading a book about discerning religious life and the ins and outs of applying. The author indicates there are some pretty common guidelines most communities stick to.

These include:

1. If a convert, must wait 3 years to apply
2. Must be celibate for at least 2 years
3. Must be of sound spiritual, physical, and mental health.

I would think some communities would vary on:

1. How they view same sex attraction
2. What level of physical malady would affect acceptance
3. Where there is a history of addiction and the length of time of sobriety
4. If a condition such as depression or bipolar disorder exists, but the person is stabilized on medication.

Any thoughts or clarifications from the above information?
