What are the best film soundtracks of all time?

C’mon film nuts (and I’m lookin’ at you, meltzerboy:)), what are some of the best film soundtracks of all time? My personal fave is Maurice Jarre’s score for Doctor Zhivago, with an honorable mention to Henry Mancini’s Touch of Evil. Also, I highly recommend music aficionados purchase both records, or in the case of Jarre, the super-long, extended and crystal clear CD. Here’s a taste of both:

And trust me, the loud crowd won’t be disappointed by Mancini, nor will lovers of gorgeous melodies be by Jarre!

The work of Ennio Morricone, particularly Ecstacy of Gold, The theme from the Good the Bad and the Ugly, and my favorite - The Big Gundown.

Also, Once Upon a Time in the West. Here, you’ll see an instrument called the theremin that mimics a female voice.

“Brideshead Revisited” (the miniseries)

“Marie Antoinette” (if you watched the movie blindfolded, you might say it was a pretty good movie)
 
So many times the movie themes are what I remember most about a movie !

  • Last of the Mohicans
  • Magnificent Seven
  • Chariots of Fire
  • Exodus
  • Braveheart
  • Bridge on the River Kwai
  • Breakfast at Tiffany’s
  • The Godfather
  • Passion of the Christ
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Titanic

Another Morricone fan here - but for “The Mission” – especially the track “Gabriel’s Oboe.”

“The Song of Bernadette.” Without Alfred Newman’s music it would be just another pious story, but with it one is lifted to the heavenly.

“The Adventures of Robin Hood” by Eric Wolfgang Corngold is magnificent.

“Ben Hur”, Miklos Rozsa, and “The Ten Commandments” Elmer Bernstein are excellent.

Another that comes to mind is “The Pink Panther” because the lilting melody tells you all you need to know about Inspector Clouseau. Another Mancini creation.

And of course, John Williams’ “Star Wars.” It too would be a lesser film without the wonderful score.

“Forbidden Planet” has one of the most haunting electronic scores by Bebe and Louis Barron, as well as “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” by Bernard Herrmann, also “Mysterious Island” and several others he scored.

And “Rebecca” by Franz Waxman.

Just to name a few.
 
I like Ennio Morricone’s scores for the spaghetti westerns.

More recent - the scores to the “Transformers” movies, and I also like and regularly listen the scores to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.
 
Oh yes, another unappreciated, but worthy contender is “Stargate” by David Arnold. Another score that beautifully captures the essence of the film’s theme.
 
I liked the soundtrack to Becket with Peter O’toole in it. Becket’s a pretty good tribute to St. Thomas Beckett.
