What are the Church Rules concerning DNR?

Hi, I’m new here and in need of help.
I have a 99-year-old Mom who’s in hospital and on the verge of surgical procedure. As in the past, I’m being asked to sign DNR. I hate the thought but wondered what does the Catholic Church say on this matter? Must we go even to the point of perhaps letting her end up on a respirator? Then, there’s the horrific “pull-the-plug” dilemma.

I crumbled tonight in hospital and need your advice.

Hi,

The Church does allow one to sign a do not resuscitate order if such a procedure would only prolong the person’s suffering. I can understand your reluctance. It’s not an easy decision to make even though the Church allows it. You and your mom are in our prayers—and there are many of us.
