What are the differences between traditional Roman Catholic spirituality and Catholic spirituality

The summary of this forum states that part of this forum is for “traditional Roman Catholic spirituality”. I’d like to know what they are and how they are different from the general term “Catholic spirituality”?

Okay, I’ll give it a shot…

I think that traditional Catholic spirituality hearkens back to a time prior to the Second Vatican Council, or in that general time frame. The Traditional Latin Mass, the Rosary, the May Procession, public processions of the Holy Eucharist on Corpus Christi, chapel veils…I would say there was even a certain ethos, i.e., a sense of awe and sacredness in Church where God in the tabernacle was the focal point, but, now has been replaced by a very comfy, horizontal dimension where the community becomes the focal point, where it becomes enamored with itself at the expense of the vertical dimension which leads all eyes to God.

As one political/Catholic pundit put it, if an outsider was to enter a Catholic Church on Sunday in this day, he would think the high point was the “Sign of Peace.”

To truly experience traditional Catholic spirituality, attend a solemn Sung High Mass. Put your missal down and just take it all in. It is the Mass of martyrs and saints.

To put it in a nutshell, the Traditional Catholicism forum is for discussing the traditional Latin Mass – also called the Tridentine Mass, the 1962 Missal, the Extraordinary Form of the Latin rite, etc. (Frankly, I wish the description of the forum mentioned that. I know, I know, there are lots of other issues involved besides the Mass-- but I just think it would avoid a lot of confusion for people if the forum description actually said “this is about the traditional Latin Mass.”)

To give you some rough idea, people who identify as “traditional” Catholics generally attend the Tridentine Latin Mass whenever possible, and encourage a return to various pre-Vatican II practices and devotions (such as prayers that are no longer common, a preference for older scripture translations such as the Douay-Reims, women wearing head coverings in church, receiving Holy Communion kneeling and on the tongue, etc.).

Well, your first paragraph was certainly irrelevant to the OP’s question, eh?

As for the second paragraph, such a vapid response either exposes you as, 1) invincibly clueluess, 2) intentionally deceitful and misleading, or 3) as an extraordinary ministerette of Holy Communion. My money’s on #2 and $3.

Some of the responses might lead to confusion, I think JKirkLVNV responded the clearest and most accurate.

There is no difference, Traditional Roman Catholic spirituality and Catholic spirituality are the same thing.

Traditional Roman Catholics defend the preservation of Catholic Spirituality. To deviate and introduce for example New Age Spirituality would offend Traditional Catholics, as it deviates from Catholic Spirituality.

Hi Water. Assuming you mean traditional Roman Catholic spirituality and *Roman Catholic * spirituality, then I’d say the only difference is in what a Roman Catholic embraces in order to enrich his/her spirituality.

One can build his/her Faith, and thus form their spirituality, by devotion(s) to, and imitation of, Christ and the Saints. Thus a traditional Catholic spirituality.

Start applying zen and such, and one moves into contemporary Catholic spirtuality. I’d guess both are here for a while, and may always be.

JMO of course, but I’d say if one is going to try to blend the two, then it would be best to build a solid traditional spirituality first. Then one can judge whether their comtemporaries are building Catholic Faith through their writings.

Catholic spirituality, by any other name is still Catholic spirituality. Regardless of the form, religious order, or devotion, if approved it is Catholic spirituality. I do not see any intent to differentiate between those who prefer TLM or the Novus Ordo.
