I am on a little journey to learn more about my Catholic faith, but one thing I am confused about are the different "Our Lady"s. What does that mean? For example…Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of Perpetual Help…

Thank you!

These are titles given to Mary. Many are based on a location where Mary appeared to someone (for example Lourdes or Knock). Other titles might be based on what Mary called herself in apparitions (Immaculate Conception) or can be based on her life (Our Lady of Sorrows for the seven sorrows she endured in her life).

Isn’t it nice that she visits us?

We are not forgotten but the fact that she appears so much in the last couple of centuries makes you feel like something big is coming and we need this for extra armour.

The Queen of England is also the Chief of the Army, Chairperson of charitable associations, etc. One person with many titles.

Mary too has many titles.

I was struck by this when I entered the Church, too. I especially love the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary as it has so many biblical and theological titles such as: Ark of the Covenant, House of Gold, Vessel of Singular Devotion, Refuge of Sinners, etc. It’s so beautiful and it’s lovely to meditate on it.
