What are the effects of receiving Holy Communion with unrepentant Mortal and Venial Sin on our souls?

I have some physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual sicknesses and am wondering about this. Not going by worldly “normal” standards, most if not all people have some or all of these sicknesses at some level, I would have to imagine. I have repented in general of my sins before a Priest, but am wondering if i need to share in more detail and that would help?!? Ex. repenting to a Priest about lust in general, instead of going into the details. Or repenting of Jealousy or Envy, but not going into detail.

Please also answer both in regards to the scriptures verses below.

If you have confessed and recieved absolution, in what way are you unrepentant?

As far as going into details, I always just ask the priest if details are needed. Usually few if any are needed.

If you were not repentant, or did not confess, then taking Holy Communion is a serious mortal sin.

Venial sins are not a problem.

Such took place in the early Church. Perhaps as a sign in the beginning of what happens spiritual (which is far worse).

(But one ought not presume such has happened in ones case (as it happened in the early days…))

It’s fine to recieve the Eucharist with VENIAL sin on your soul, but not mortal. When you have mortal sin on your soul, that means your soul is dead and you have chosen to seperate yourself from God. If you were to recieve Jesus with mortal sin on your soul than you commit another mortal sin. If you were to do this for a long period of time, it could possibly result in health issues.

Your Confession was valid as long as you were not deliberately witholding any mortal sins, or important details about those mortal sins from the priest. There’s no need to go into great detail, butdon’t just just say you “lusted” when you also touched yourself impurely or when you happened to be lusting after someone of the same sex or an inanimate object. Those kinds of details need to be confessed.

With regards to venial sin…
When we bless ourselves with holy water upon entering the church,
when we pray the confiteor at the beginning of the Mass,
and when we actually receive the Body and Blood of our Lord in Holy Communion,
these are three things that remove venial sins from our souls, correct?

This is how I was taught in RCIA as well as what I have read in spiritual books since that time. I always walk out of Mass feeling clean and light-hearted, knowing that my sins are forgiven. Confession is a necessity for mortal sin, and a good habit for venial sin as well, but not strictly necessary when one only has venial sins.

If I am wrong about this, please someone correct me, but I am pretty sure, because I have encountered this perspective repeatedly.

Your problems might not be that the sins are unconfessed or that you are unrepentent. That being said, sometimes, in some cases, there are some details that need to be told. Sometimes some things need to be “brought into the light”, which is Christ, in order to break the hold they have one us. Sometimes psychological counseling is needed. Sometimes the problems are not mental/emotional but spiritual. It may be a situation where more confession is not what is needed, but rather priestly counseling. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your priest and talk to him about it. If confession is also necessary, I’m quite certain he’ll guide you into that during your time together.

Also, I forgot to mention that you must confess how many times you committed a certain mortal sin, or if you don’t remember you can say something like “a bunch of times,” or “about five times.”

Also, the next time you go to Confession, any mortal sin you left out, you need to mention in your next Confession and if you deliberately withheld any important information about your sins, than you need to go to Confession again before recieving the Eucharist.

Lust is a category of sin. Did you have impure thouhts? Confess impure thoughts. Did the lust include masturbation? Confess masturbating. Did it include porn or unclean images? Confess those as well.

Example: I confess one instance of lusting, looking at porn, and masturbating. (There is no need to go into the nasty details of the sin. If you don’t know the number, give an approximate.)

I would not go so far as to say even this. Venial sins are forgiven at Mass during the confiteor. If it is not a Mass, or one is making a private communion (such as in a sick bed) then one should always make an act of confession first.

 When you have mortal sin on your soul, that means your soul is dead and you have chosen to seperate yourself from God.

Our souls are created eternal, and will live forever, either in heaven, or in hell. What has been killed in the case of mortal sin is the sanctifying grace of God, which we need in order to attain heaven. You are right, it is when someone chooses to separate themselves from God.

Speaking for myself, as I did this for many years, it also hardenened my heart against the ability to sense the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. I think it also leads to apostasy in the case of people no longer believing in the Real Presence.

The Church always considers the understanding of the author in interpreting Scripture. In those days, there was a much “causal” interpertation of the world around them. So if someone became ill, the assumption was that God willed the illness or they deserved it through some sin. Sort of like the properity gospel inverted.

Of course God will do what He will in His own mysteriious ways, but I would not worry that you are going to cause yourself physical illness from receiving unworthily. I would worry instead about the spiritual harm (which does also effect us physically sometimes so…

Also, if you did deliberitly witheld important information (while knowing how wrong it was–this was implied, but I want to make sure you know) than during your next Confession, every mortal sin you already confessed to, you need to confess again as no sin is forgiven in an invalid Confession.
