Why are their so many different types of rosaries and what are they?

It depends on what you define as “rosary”. Do you mean a series of prayers prayed with beads?

One form is the ladder rosary. I like it-- they’re very sturdy.

Another form is the penal rosary. It has a nice history.

So are there only two? Because I saw a post that did say like I am going to pray the perpetual rosary?

For most of the liturgical year, the Franciscan Crown Rosary recalls the Seven Joys of Blessed Mother.
  1. The Annunciation
  2. The Visitation
  3. The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ
  4. The Adoration of the Magi
  5. The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple
  6. The Appearance of Christ to Mary after the Resurrection
  7. The Assumption and Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven

A perpetual rosary is just someone/some group saying the rosary and never letting it end.

There are two ways to answer your question:
  1. There are different physical types of rosaries/prayer beads - you can get the traditional one with 5 decades (59-ish beads), a 7 decade one, a single decade “bracelet” or ring style, and so on.
  2. There’s a long list of various prayers you can pray with the beads. Most of these are called Chaplets to differentiate from the traditional rosary. You can even make up something of your own if using the beads for counting is helpful.

A rosary is just a tool to help you keep track of your prayers. If one really wanted to, you can pray the rosary on your hands, no beads required.

The different rosaries are just apart of different traditions and help you pray different rosaries for different reasons. Your standard rosary
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) will typically look like this. It can be metal or paracord or rope or plastic beads, it doesn’t matter.

Your local parish ought to have some lying around the chapel. You can pick one up or ask the preist to give you one.

Chaplets are different than the rosary as they usually have different prayers associated with them.

The saint Michael chaplet is going to be different than the standard rosary in the amount of beads and prayers associated with it.

If you want to start praying either chaplets or rosaries, I would download the “Laudate” app for your smart phone.

The app is 100% free and contains virtual rosaries and chaplets as well as a whole database of prayers and two versions of the Bible.

That would be a good place to start
