I have been watching EWTN and reading literature with Priests, Brother, religious. etc in different orders, and i guess these titles distinguish them to their order, but what do they mean i.e. (O.F.M, O.C.D Fr. Corapi my favorite SOLT) what does these titles mean can someone translate? Thanks

Dear Sean,

“O.F.M.” means Order of Friars Minor. Minor means little or humble. It is the official name for the Franciscan Friars. “O.F.M. Cap.” Are the initials for the Capuchin Franciscan Friars.

“O.C.D.” stands for Order of Carmelites Discalced (shoeless), commonly called the Discalced Carmelites—as opposed to “O Carm” which stand for the Carmelites of the common observance.

“S.O.L.T.” stands for the Society of Our Lady of the Trinity.

I’ll throw mine in for free. “O.P.” stands for Order of Preachers which is the official name for us Dominicans.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
