I have a question. I converted to Catholicism in 1980 and fell away rather quickly (long story for another time :)). Anyway, I started back last year and several times have been at mass when Father said “so-and-so passed away, the funeral is tomorrow” (or was yesterday, or whatever.) Then he says something, and the congregation says something, and it all sounds like mumbles to me. I keep straining my ears to hear what they are saying, and I never figure it out! Could someone please clue me in?!! Thanks!!

Why don’t you just go up to Father the next time you’re at Mass and ask him? Plenty of people are hard of hearing, have English as a second language, are reverts, converts, or otherwise newbies–I’m sure he’ll understand.

Let’s see if I can rember -

V. Eternal rest give unto him, 0 Lord;

R. And let perpetual light shine upon him.

followed by:

V. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithfull departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

R. Amen.

You mean it was in English and you couldn’t understand what he said because he mumbled? So much for not understanding the Mass when it was in Latin. Ha!

It could be this:

Priest: Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord.

People: And let perpetual light shine upon him.

And, in case it was in Latin, it would be:

*V: Requiem æternam dona ei, Domine.

R: Et lux perpetua luceat ei.

V: Anima eius et animæ omnium fidelium defunctorum per misericordiam Dei requiescant in pace.*

RIP,
tee

Thanks to all of you - yes, this is what they were saying! I got the “Eternal rest” part, could’t hear the rest, then couldn’t hear what the people’s reply was. Maybe they forgot and were mumbling to cover it… I didn’t want to lean too close to the next person in the pew to try to listen in…! I guess I could just ask Father, but I knew some of you here would know the answer! Thanks again!!
