What are (were) Ember Days?

Greetings - I am reading a book about Bl. Zelie Martin, mother of St. Therese of Lisieux. The book mentions that Mme. Martin would not eat supper on Ember Days. I recall as a very little girl, I saw the term “Ember Day” on our family’s Catholic calendar. What is the significance of “Ember Day” and what happened to them?
