I volunteer with a local non profit hospice service. Visit with patients, listen to them and pray with them.

Hello!

I am looking for ways I can serve. Can you please cite some examples of lay ministry you are involved in that you enjoy?

Thanks,
ES
I teach Religious Education. However, one does not need to be a teacher to help with youth.

I am in the choir: If you are not a musician keeping the music library in order in the larger churches is very time consuming.

Other ways:

Help wash dishes and put away tables and chairs after events.

Be on the prayer chain.

Yard work.

Cleaning the Church.

Greet people who are coming in.

Be friendly.

Don’t just ask what you can do. Keep your eyes open for possibilities.

The things I am doing now -

Rosary ministry - once a month me and a small team of benefactors mail out a bulk order rosary books to a parish in a different state.

Food pantry - I buy 2 cases of Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli a month for Food Pantry.

Daily Proverb email - I share a proverb from the Book of Proverbs in Bible each morning with a group of people in a BCC email. It includes Catholic commentary and any applicable cross references.

Outside of praying rosaries and often pray LOH that’s really about it right now.

I am looking for ministry options outside the realm of Knights of Columbus. I don’t think our parish has a St. Vincent De Paul Society.

I can start going to the Thursday night adoration for an hour, that I could do. I had been going to the gym on Thursdays but I recently cancelled my membership (will just run instead).

When it comes to Mass, I would prefer to just focus on the Mass. I will consider being on the hospitality team.

Thanks for your contributions. Please keep your examples coming.

I want to do more, I’m just not sure what to do, or what would be feasible for me.
From my experience, the parishes that I attended were always looking for members for the various parish committees.

To serve on our Parish Council, a person had to be nominated and there was a discernment process, as the person served a term for a few years, but to serve on a committee, it wasn’t like that.

It was preferred though, that if you were going to sit on a committee, that you had some kind of experience to bring to that committee.

Like if you were going to sit on the finance committee, it was preferred that you had some kind of bookkeeping or financial records experience, for example.

I sat on two different committees while I was a parish member, and I was also a choir member and a cantor, too. I stopped due to being a care-giver for one of my family members, who required more and more of time with care-giving.
