What are you giving up for Lent this year?

I must make a general confession to the community and admit that I have not given up anything yet, which I do feel a bit guilty about. I’m not good at self-denial really, so obviously I should try to work on that.
Sounds like you’re looking for suggestions, eh?

I recommend giving up watching or streaming movies/television one or two days a week.

Whadaya think, little brother, could you do it? Would it have any spiritual benefit for you?

And before you ask, no, I am not doing this with you. I’m giving up Minecraft and it’s been driving me bonkers in the past 72 hours! You’re on your own – unless you wanna give up video games as well. 😄

**Just to be clear, I’m a middle-aged woman who is, apparently, addicted to a computer game. Lent came just in time. 🤣 😂 🤣 😂

Minecraft huh? Interesting! I’ll try not to go off topic here😊.

Yes, that does tend to scandalize kids when mom uses a bad word.

I never said what I was giving up this year (or doing more of…) but I did say what I had done in a previous year --giving up the cream in my coffee. I enjoy reading what others are thinking about. I don’t think they are any more holy than any other person and I can get some good ideas maybe for future years… just saying… 🐟

Imagine all of us keeping our fasts and abstinences private…

I dont think God is impressed by clever ideas of fasts. He is honored by intimate, personal, sincere relations through fasting. Those ideas will come through prayerfully talking and listening with Him.

and reading–reading the lives of the saints… we get a lot of good ideas from the lives of the saints. And aren’t we all in the communion of saints? I know I want to be. We are just reading anyway… Right???

I remember when I first read The Story Of a Soul (the autobiography of St Therese of Lisieux) that she had written about so many of her private sacrifices. She even wrote down how she befriended the one Sister she couldn’t stand, and I always thought, “That poor nun had to know the Saint was talking about her!”

😳

This Lent I hope I can forgive those I haven’t forgiven yet and give all those memories up and move forward in my existence.
Pray for me.
Have a blessed and inspiring Lent everyone.

The alarm thing is definitely the hardest! Did that last year. This year I’m spending an hour less in bed in the morning.

I just now decided to “give up” debating on this forum. Only positive, encouraging posts from me as of this moment.

Thanks for the opportunity to share that.

I really haven’t given up anything yet, either. I planned to give up my laziness, but I’ve been lazier than ever!

Sometimes Lent gets off to a slow start – plenty of time to still have a good Lent! Maybe it’s more meaningful for you this year to add in more prayer, good works, almsgiving?

I gave up the news on TV and in the media. Not even reading the newspaper. My mother loves the news and knows to inform me about important things (ie: flu epidemic, any food recalls that may affect us or our fur babies, weather issues, etc). But things like what Trump ate for breakfast or what Melania wore to whatever function aren’t important to me.

The news will still be reporting the same thing after Lent as it’s reporting now, Lily. It seems they’re having a problem getting “new news!” 🤣
