What are you giving up for lent?

My girlfriend and I are spending Lent without each other in order to make God even more the focus of our lives. We only meet twice a week to attend Mass together, to pray, and to talk for a little while. So far, it’s proven to be far more difficult than any other Lent I’ve experienced. My girfriend’s friends say she’s having a difficult time with it also. I think it will have been a great thing for us in the end.

Bishop Fulton Sheen writes…

Mortication is good, but only when it is done out of love of God. A “saint” who spends his (or her) life sizzling on hot coals or reclining on railroad spikes would never be canonized by the Church. Asceticism for asceticism’s sake is actually a form of egotism, for self-discipline is only a means, the end of which is greater love of God. Any form of asceticism that disrupted charity would be wrong–this was the mistake of the monk who decided to live only on crusts and upset the whole monastery, turning it into one vast crust hunt to satisfy his idiosyncrasies.

Oh man, is that true? Brutal! I was with a friend last night and I told him what I was giving up for Lent, but it was not out of pride but rather to show him that I do these things → he’s agnostic, but his wife is Catholic, and I was the witness to his marriage…

Of course this suggestion of yours is silly. We all remain anonymous here on CAForums…so that nullifies the whole public issue. Naturally it would be wrong to go public with your sacrifices for lent. This thread is good because it helps others understand the various things one can do for lent. Try loosening up a little and helping others out with some real ideas.
